We had a bit of an issue finding the apartments in the car, but once we arrived Luigi the owner gave us room 25, a lovely spacious apartment with mezzanine en-suite bedroom and well-equipped kitchen. Balcony was perfect for us too, with lovely view of the sunset every night.
Meta is a lovely little town a short train ride from Sorrento, with some nice restaurants and a great little bakery and pizza shop nearby. We were glad to stay somewhere away from all the tourists of Sorrento in August, and apart from the scary driving and sheer amount of traffic, we had a lovely relaxing stay at Castellano, just the job!
The day we arrived, Luigi gave us a map and a clue to meta. That night we enjoyed a beautiful unobstructed sunset from the roof top. The room was big and airy and you could easily stay for several days as there was a full kitchen. We loved the location and our host!
Room is very average, linen and crockery very old, nice big room with some cooking facilities. Bathroom ok
It gets really hot in the summer and is very noisy at night, with all the motorbikes up and down the street
If you want aircon and wifi you need to pay extra
We booked the room 22 for five days in July. It was nice and clean, all needs met. There was a TV, shower, cooker, fridge and freezer. No air conditioning, but as we had a balcony and a big fan, it made no difference. This apartment was in two floors, separated by a nice spiral staircase. We have two children under the age of six, but had no bother with the stairs. The biggest problem we had around the children was the upstairs, as although it was safely fenced off so that you couldn't fall down, the kids were still small enough to fit through the metal poles. thankfully they took our word for if and stopped trying soon enough. We had a double bed, single bed and a sofa bed for a family of four which was plenty. Only issue we had with the apartment was that there was no hot water when we got there, but we turned the boiler on in the bathroom and got hot showers within the hour. Not a real problem.
The owner,Luigi, was a total star. He lives on the upstairs apartment and was always on hand when needed. He provided us with loads of maps, recommendations and useful information throughout our visit. He was great with children too, who absolutely loved him. His English was excellent, although we preferred to practice our pidgeon Italian on him.
This apartment is located in Meta, which is a lovely place full of locals, not tourists. It's only five minutes away from Sorrento on a train, which goes every fifteen minutes or so and only costs 1,30 per adult and children go free. The tickets could be bought at the station. No bother at all. You can also get to Napoli in the same train, costing 3,60 for an adult. It takes about an hour, or you can get off earlier at Pompeii. So the transport is not a problem at all.
Meta itself is quite small, all walking distance. The beach is 900 metres away and took us about twenty minutes with the young kids. It's all downhill going there, and uphill on the stairs on the way back. Luigi has a deal with a local shuttle bus though, who will pick up from the beach and take back to the apartment for just an euro per person. We found this totally unnecessary, though. There are two big supermarkets in Meta, plenty of small shops and some restaurants. Better self-catering, or going to Sorrento where restaurants are everywhere - though prices are a lot higher there. The pizzeria across the road from the apartment is lovely, with brilliant staff and good prices. It's only 12 Euros for a huge family pizza, 6 for a regular one and 5 for a nice meal of gnocchi. Well worth a try. There is a nice place called Ristobar right up the stairs from the beach too, with nice food and lovely staff - again, with really good prices. We had three pizzas, an antipasti, two bottles of juice, water, two bottles of wine and a plate of gnocchi for sixty Euros.
We stayed in apartment No.12 for 2 weeks and it was lovely. The apartment was lovely and clean with a beautiful little terrace, where we had breakfast each morning. Our host Luigi was very helpful and always on hand to give us advise. The roof terrace was amazing with views of the sea and mountains, which we often had all to ourselves. We chose Meta as our base, as it was so easy to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento and the Amalfi coast. The apartment was only a short walk to both the bus and train, which were very cheap and reliable.
We would definitely recommend this apartment.
We lived in amazing apartment No 15. It is a studio with terrace and beauty views to mountains and Sorrento. A very quiet, cozy apartments house and area.Only 300 meters walk from the railway Circumvesuviana, from which you can reach Sorrento, Pompei, Ercolano, Oplantis (charming), and bus stop to beach, Sorrento, in a time Amalfi, Positano. We used the trains daily because this area is wonderfull. From roof sun terrace we overlooking surroundings and unique sun set. Near very good pizzeria Guliano, all pizza very tasty and a small price. Luigi was so kind and helpful, he is take care about every guest. We are grateful Luigi.
We chose Meta as a base for exploring the area around Sorrento as it gave good rail access but was not in busy Sorrento itself. Luigi met us on arrival and was very thorough with all the information to make our stay in the area and the apartment itself, a memorable one. We chose an apartment with a mezzanine bedroom and it would be a little difficult for those who are not able bodied. We did find cooking meals on the stove where only one burner could be used at a time to be a little challenging. The foibles of a century old house I suppose. The suggested restaurant nearby provided lovely home cooked food for a bargain 12 Euro.
