Grand Hotel La Sonrisa
Certificate of Excellence

My wife and I stayed at La Sonrisa for three nights and we enjoyed the experience. We were part of group of 16. The first appearance is bit over whelming given the area surrounding the hotel. Our group was quickly processed and we were soon on our way to our rooms. The room was clean and adequate. Breakfast and dinner were included in our itinerary and were a combination of table service and buffet style. The food was good but typical of hotel catering. It would appear the hotel depends largely on groups and weddings. On several nights we were entertained by a fireworks display celebrating the wedding of the day.

Room Tip: Rooms located above the function rooms can be a bit noisy. But usually things quieten down round 11...

We were travelling with two children aged 14 & 11 by car in August. We had two amazing days here, the pool was lovely and clean, lovely to cool off in after site-seeing in the heat all morning ,the food in the restaurant was very good as was the waiter service. Our room was spacious and very clean, beds were comfortable, the mini bar was well stocked and there are plenty of large towels supplied and these were replaced daily which was a bonus for us as we were touring Italy and it helped to save our own towels for other places. There was a wedding on whilst we were there but this didn't effect our stay at all,in fact the fireworks in the evening whilst sat i the gardens enjoying drinks was a lovely added bonus! WiFi was very good both in our room and in the grounds, and with a teenager we were thankful of this.Overall a really lovely place to stay, absolutely beautiful inside and worth a walk around just to look at the décor We would certainly stay here agin should we ever return to Pompei.

We've just completed a five night stay at La Sonrisa. We had been looking forward to this experience since being introduced to the hotel a few months ago when shopping nearby.

This place is exuberant in decor (inside and out), and the staff wonderful: Daniello and Rosaria were so welcoming on arrival and thereafter, the most endearing Carmella escorted us to our choice of rooms, Antonio & Carmine so solicitous of our dining preferences, the friendly staff who shuttled us between the hotel and the Circumvesuviana - I regret I cannot acknowledge each by name.

Those looking for a minimalist experience should look elsewhere. Those who can enjoy exuberance will appreciate the decor (inside & out), the events (wedding receptions, first birthdays), and the sense of inclusiveness, and the well prepared dining choices. We were constantly smiling, and look forward to returning.

Good things: Good position to visit by car (car is necesary) all point of interest, clean air because is close to the mountain, nice personal, interesting hotel, is a good idea to stay in this hotel because is different.
Bad things: poor breakfast, noise because in every night were weedings, u can't go there with babies!!! If you want to stay prepare to wake up every night at 1 AM by fire crackers. :)
The rooms are not 5*, more 3+*.

Amazing hotel, Awesome staff, that are always happy to help.
Poor location, but the shuttle minibus the hotel provides is great and cheap too.
It takes about 20 mins to get to the train station and costs about 2Euros to get a train to Sorrento.... Naples is the other way and costs about 5EUROS.
slightly annoying that there were weddings on almost everyday we were there but guess that cant be helped as its a place for weddings and holiday makers. so we just tried to ignore all the guests taking pics and walking around the grounds, by staying out of the way or listening to music by the pool.
beautiful hotel and would definitely stay here again.

Loved this hotel, with the Venetian styling and super friendly and helpful staff. The entire hotel is spotlessly clean and well maintained.

While the rooms are suitably faux-ornate like the rest of the hotel, they could use some additional traveler-comforts like safes, additional power outlets, task lighting and newer mattresses.

However, the common areas are what make this hotel so special. Everything is over-the-top and it's fun to spend a few days loitering the garishly ornate halls, restaurants and grounds of the hotel. The big waterfall-fountain near the pool is a great photo-spot.

You will require a car to stay at this hotel since the neighbourhood seems seedy. That changes drastically when you enter the hotel gates. Access to the highways is good and it's a 15 min drive to Pompeii and 45 min to either Sorrento or Positano.

What a beautifully strange place. The hotel drips in gaudy glamour with pink glass chandeliers and superfluously ornate mock Venetian furniture. Our room was decked in dusky pink wallpaper, with a lavish bed underneath a tacky bright pink Jesus on the cross. The swimming pool has dolphin statues smiling amid gushings of mini fountains. And there is a waterfall lashing down from a decorated corner. The reception area has a bright blue Venetian-style bar but primarily is decorated with old photographs of the owner posing with the likes of Sophia Loren and Maradona.

And these photographs perhaps reflect the nature of this place: Once, 20-odd years ago, this hotel was at the peak of luxury. Now, the décor seems dated and a little tired. Our bed was so old the mattress had sunk. The TV offered no English subtitles and the bathroom has no bath. The room furniture items are more like stage props than of any quality. It has a thin veneer of luxury but scratch the surface and it's clear the place needs an overhaul. Certainly not worth a five star rating.

Also, the cavernous place is more a wedding venue than a hotel. On one of the days we stayed there were no less than three weddings - two happening at the same time. We were sunbathing by the pool among wedding guests with photographers nearly walking over us with their cameras. The dining area also appeared to be a 'wedding room', with white everything and utterly devoid of atmosphere.

The location is great for Pompeii, but we spent an hour trying to get to Sorrento beach. It's not near any beaches itself.

On the plus side the staff are fantastic - in particular Antonio who gave us a complementary dessert on finding out we were on our honeymoon, and Daniel who had a smiling 'no problem' attitude to everything. Also after a time we got used to this overly ornate character of a hotel, it has a charm - just not a five-star one.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from any wedding activity, and preferably one with a bath.
