The room was truly wonderful. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Loved the castle and the food and the pool. Only regret is not staying longer.

The location is fantastic. The sense of staying in a 13th century castle is a unique and great experience. The hotel is much better than we expected from the website. The rooms were very clean, the service was excellent and the staff was also very helpful. Nothing negative to mention!

Reviewed 15 October 2010

We stayed 3 days at the beginning of October with another couple. Being out of season, there were never more than 3 or 4 other couples staying during this time. Having seen the comments about the impact of weddings, I took the precaution of checking with the hotel when I booked that there would be none during our stay. The atmosphere was quiet and most relaxing. The castle, which has been destroyed and rebuilt a number of times over the years, has been beatifully restored and converted into a hotel in the last 15 years. It is set in a small village on a hilltop with lovely views towards the coast

The main part of the hotel is completely enclosed within the castle walls and is entered by a narrow gateway just wide enough for a large volvo estate to squeeze through. It contains a number of buildings, some of which are sublet as bars and restaurants whilst the others are accommodation, each with its own parking space. The reception, lounge etc. are in the main building. The swimming pool, the main dining room, conference room and lawns are outside the castle walls.

During our stay only one of the restaurants was open for dinner each night. One where we ate twice was excellent. The other was a fish restaurant. Although there was a menu outside, the proprietor who spoke no english elected not use the menu but to tell us instead what was available. We elected to have a starter, miss the first course and have just a main course. Fortunately, as far as we understood, the dishes on offer sounded acceptable. The cold fish starter when it arrived was OK but was then followed by another dish of hot shell fish which was very nice but much more than we wanted. The main course was grilled fish which was OK but not remarkable. We had ordered local wine but have no idea what it was as the labels appeared to have been partially eaten by snails and were unreadable. The bill at the end was ridiculous and twice the other restaurant. We were not surprised that he had no custom the following night and did not open. We made the hotel aware of our views before we left.

Apart from the Fish restaurant episode, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel. It is somewhat off the beaten track so a car with Satnav certainly helps. The reason for our stay in the area was to visit the grave of a relative killed in the fighting on the Gothic Line in 1944. When I made the reservation I had no idea that the castle had been part of the German defensive line and that there was a museum outside the castle wall. The hotel very kindly arranged with the curator to open specially for us and also found an interpreter.

We spent a full week at beautiful Palazzo Viviani, situated on top of a hill with wonderful views. Good service - the man at the reception spoke English and would help us with anything. Very clean rooms - sheets and towels changed every day and floors mopped every day. Excellent breakfast that suited everyone in the family. Minibar was free, which I have never experienced before! Free wifi.

You need your own car to get around. The scenery is breathtaking and the two restaurants at the castle serve delicious food, but there is not much more than the "borgo" in Montegridolfo. Also, dining at the two restaurants is quite expensive for a family of four, so we wanted to drive around the area. There is plenty to see.

Extremely good value for money.

Located at the highest point in a tiny walled hill town a half hour's drive from Rimini, this medieval castello offered us a wonderful room with linen sheets, fluffy pillows, modern private bath, and a commanding view of the valley and neighboring hill town--all for just 90 Euro. Dinner at the Ristoro di Palazzo Viviani, in an old wine cellar a 2-minute walk from our room, was exquisite. We spent just one night here--would love to have stayed longer!

What a wonderful hotel. I went there for a one night during my week at Rimini, and was completely satisfied. Room was great, the girl at reception was very friendly and the breakfast was superb. Weekends were little bit cheaper and definitely worth it. I wish I had been there longer. My own mistake was to wait evening bus at Rimini, rather than take train to Cattolica and go by earlier bus from there.
