We've stayed here before. And we're taking friends there again this summer. The Melia, Alicante, is outstandingly located overlooking the beach on one side and the harbour on the other. It is also superbly located for the tram station on the beach, which we use to get there from our home in Denia.
Ensure you book a room with sea view - because this is spectacular by day and night. You can hear the waves rolling onto the shore, which is a very relaxing way to get to sleep.
The Melia breakfast is legendary and worth including in your room package. Huge variety of Spanish and European foods, with plenty of fruit and even cava for breakfast.
One useful tip is to join the Sol Melia chain's guest membership club - this gives you discount room rates and, last year at least, bought us two breakfasts for the price of one.
There is plenty of fine dining in Alicante itself, but the hotel's small restaurant serves a yummy variety of Spanish cuisine and boasts a good Spanish wine list. Worth dining in on one night, maybe, if you're staying for several days.
We found it cheaper to book online direct with the hotel than going through one of the holiday websites. We did this via Trip Advisor, where a discount is often available to members.
