In traveling to Tokyo I knew that I wanted to stay somewhere slightly traditional, and had searched for Ryokans in the city. Hotel Ryumeikan Ochanomizu Honten proved to be the perfect mix of traditional with modern amenities.
The rooms were extremely spacious compared to other hotels in the city, and a great value for the amount of space you get. The service was impeccable and very personal, as there are only 9 rooms throughout the entire hotel -- which I was informed dates back to 1899! Upon check in, someone guided us to our room and gave us a very thorough tour- explaining every amenity. The Library / Tea Room can't be missed!
Of course I have to mention the bath tub, as well. Probably the defining feature of the hotel, every room features a bath tub hand crafted by artisans using special Shigaraki earthenware. Pictures don't do it justice-- it's quite large, big enough to comfortably float around in.
The traditional Japanese breakfast was also a treat, something I wasn't easily able to find at restaurants. And the staff had left out yukatas (casual kimonos) to wear around the room, a perfect touch.More
