Foods to definitely try when you go:
-Tuna spare ribs
-Cod soft roe au Gorgonzola gratin(very creamy)
-Shrimp and fresh corn tempura
-Rice in cold broth topped with salmon caviar, ochazuke style
- Sakura cherry blossom gelato with milk
I went here beginning of November with some friends and family. It is a bit away from the hustle and bustle that you would normally expect from being in Shibuya but the area is very quaint.
The staff spoke English very well and we had no difficulties in ordering what we wanted.
One of the unique things that Kaikaya has done is to separate the non smoking and smoking seatings in 2 different entrances and rooms. Usually when I dine in Japan, I would usually get trapped in all the second hand smoking. However, Kaikaya’s concept was very nice- both smokers and non smokers can enjoy their dinner.
The seating can be a little cramped for bigger parties so I suggest booking early. It does get crowded later in the evening so I would suggest making reservations around 6:30pm for the best experience. You get 2 hours to dine and order whatever you want. The staff will give you a heads up when you have 30 mins left of the dining service to order. Please keep in mind that this place is small so they try to impose a 2 hr. seating limit once you start ordering- I found that to be plenty of time to order so no worries.
