“Great Price, Small Rooms, Decent Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2012

The Shinjuku Washington Hotel is located in the business and government section of Shinjuku. The location is a bit of a walk to Shinjuku JR and Metro Station (one of the busiest in the metropolitan Tokyo area. From the Shinjuku Station one get anywhere via JR Trains, or Tokyo Metro. Near the station offers plenty of interesting shops, restaurants, and nightlife. The hotel is part of the bus shuttle system for 3000 yen one way (The shuttle is a super deal, compared to taking a taxi one way to/from Narita which was about $293.00). It is a large hotel with plenty of restaurants inside the complex. Like most Japanese hotels unless you book into a four or five star western style hotels the rooms at the Shinjuku Washington Hotel is very small. The rooms are clean and offer free internet via LAN connection. The lobby of the hotel is located on the 3rd floor. Staff was very helpful, and spoke decent english. Stayed there for five nights at the beginning of my trip, and two nights upon returning to Tokyo before leaving Japan. Was able to leave one piece of luggage at the hotel which was helpful. If your breakfast is not included in your booking price, you should go ahead and pay for it. I tried both the breakfast buffet (25 Floor in the Main Building) and the Japanese Breakfast on the Second Floor both are 1500 Yen. The buffet offers unlimited everything with both Western and Japanese items for breakfast, and unlimited coffee (a must for me). One thing to note if you are doing the breakfast buffet is to get there at 7:00 AM or around 9:30 AM as people really pack the restaurant. It also offers a great view of Tokyo's Municipal Government Buildings. I would consider staying at The Washington Shinjuku Hotel again, as the price is very good, staff was helpful, and the location worked out just fine for me.

Room Tip: It is hard for me to say as I was located on the 10th floor my first stay and 9th floor on my second...

We stayed here twice in December 2010, the first time we stayed here our room was incredibly small & stunk of smoke (this hotel, guests can smoke in the rooms)...the air conditioning was stuck on one temperature (way too hot) and you couldn't open the window. Because the room was so small, the only place we could leave our suitcases was in the room hallway.

The second time we stayed here, we got a larger room with a opening window - much better!

If you can, try and get a larger room...it is worth it!

I probably wouldn't stay at this hotel again.

I stayed for 6 nights and it's true what other people are saying. The rooms are very small but the price was right so I don't mind. I don't spend that much time in my room anyway. The room was very warm. It would be nice if the climate controls were controlled by a thermostat. There's just a fan and I'm not sure if it was blowing warmer air or cooler air. The staff were friendly and helpful and the location was good. Just a few blocks walk to Shinjuku Station. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for a couple but if you're solo it's okay.

Spacious reception hall, kind of busy place.
I booked in here as I could get a bus back to the airport from outside the door. That was with arrangement from the staff in the foyer who book you in.

The rooms here are comforotable but, god, mine was very small -but then it is Tokyo.

Quite a long walk down to the shopping area at SHinjuku but I managed it. Lot of concrete about : )

Office blocks mainly around here before you hit the shops.

We stayed for 3 nights, the moment we step into the room we feel so warm & stuffy. It was a nightmare for us, we has difficulties to get into sleep, no ventilation at all. The windows cannot be opened.

We are sweating terribly in the middle of the night. The staffs are kind & friendly but they couldnt do anything about it.

The television screen is so small that my laptop is even wider than it, lobby only a few seats even though the lobby is big enough to place more couches.

I took part in the Tokyo marathon and chose this hotel because of its location right at the start (and because of it's reasonable pricing). I arrived at 11 but were told that I could not get a room before 2 (hard after travelling about 20hours but think that may be practise since also my friends who stayed in a more posh hotel got same message). I had heard that typically the rooms would have been smoked in, so asked for a non smoking room. They only had that in the 'womens only floor' and I got a so called Japanese room with Japanese flooring. The room was lovely with a great view. It turned out to be fairly quiet as well. The bathroom was very dated and small and a note on the wall told you to keep door closed when showering or the hot air would set the firealarm off in the bedroom. But as there wasn't any airsystem in the bathroom this was clearly an annoyance. The shampoos etc very from a different century I think. The smell extremely unpleasant. Towel supply very modest. The bedroom itself was VERY small. The suitcase had to be fully packed at all times, because there was no room to move around. The bed was lovely however and the traditional japanese pillows (one with beans in) were very pleasant to sleep with. Main problem with the room was that there is simply no air and even there is an air conditioning the temperature can't be lowered. The whole womens floor seem to be an airtight box with a very high temperature, you feel it the moment you use your keycard to get access. The windows can't be opened (without help from hotel). This makes the stay uncomfortable as you are constantly sweating. There are big queues to the breakfast in the mornings which is also annoying. The breakfast is when you get to it very nice with an enormous selection. The hotel as such is quite anonymous. The staff in the reception are helpful but in a tired way (not a lot of patience). When checking in at 2pm, again there is an enormous queue at the 'foreign visitors desk' and when I was there hardly any at the 'normal' desk, I asked if I could go to that, but no, not possible, Seems unflexible. Internet is another nuissance. There is cabled internet in the room but it seems arcaic to having to turn on the tv and perform some procedure before it works. There is supposedly wifi in public areas but I didn't get it to work in the restaurant.
The location of the hotel is great, only a short walk to the train station, through a lively and nice area. Fantastic shopping around the station. At all times I have felt very safe in this area, even when typically being the one in our group walking to the hotel alone. There are fantastic restaurants in the area such as the New York Bar & Grill (at the Park Hyatt), which is only a short walk from here.

Room Tip: ask for non smoking room get someone immediately to open the windows for you

If you are looking for a clean, comfortable and convenient hotel around Shinjuku area with reasonable prices, this is it. Though space is limited in this hotel room, it has a comfortable bed, with in-room internet access, convenient and walking distance to the Shinjuku JR station, lots of eateries along the way and restaurants are also available in the hotel building. Come during any season, hot summer or cold winter, there's covered underground passage that leads you to the hotel in 15-20mins walk from the JR station.
