Both of me and my wife found this restaurant when we walked around Ueno market (right across JR Ueno Station) 2 weeks ago. We walked around the market first and my wife finally decided to give this restaurant a try as we both would like to try having seafood in a local Japanese restaurant.
Although almost every sign was written in Japanese, we could sense that this one is quite popular among locals. The place was fully packed even after we returned back 45 minutes later and the fact that we visited this outlet on Friday late evening (close to 10:00 pm) might be a factor as well.
We went inside and a male waiter greeted us in Japanese and asked how many people in our party. He directed to us to go inside and after passing by guest tables, we realized that we were seated in an area using Japanese style tables (sat down on the floor where we could hang our feet underneath the table). They asked us to take off our shoes, put them in a bag and carry them with us to our tables.
The area was really smokey and it was really loud but we both decided to give it a try as their seafood looked very tempting. Plus, we were really hungry and we had to find something decent to eat. Once we sat down, the waiter handed us their menu, all written in Japanese which we didn't understand. When we asked for their English menu, they handed over an iPad where we could find all menu in English and placed our order by using the same device.
In the iPad, they also indicated which item was their best seller starting from # 1 down to the bottom of the list which was quite handy for tourists like us. It took us almost 15 minutes to decide which ones we would like to have. We ordered their best seller item (don't remember what they call it but it was like a creamy thing in a crab shell but the taste was really delicious). We also ordered their best seller clams.
All our orders were served within 7 minutes (very quick considering the restaurant was fully packed). However, it took us more than 10 minutes to figure out on how to grill those live clams and eat them. We had to ask the waiters few times to help us with the grill stove and it was not really an easy job to do as they moved very fast/quickly.
Overall, it was quite a fun experience for both of us this time. Food taste was really delicious although it was not cheap either. Will we return back to this restaurant ? Definitely but we have to find a time where they are not really crowded and we really prefer to seat in a normal table (sit down in a normal chair) next time.
