Both of me and my wife found this restaurant when we walked around Ueno market (right across JR Ueno Station) 2 weeks ago. We walked around the market first and my wife finally decided to give this restaurant a try as we both would like to try having seafood in a local Japanese restaurant.

Although almost every sign was written in Japanese, we could sense that this one is quite popular among locals. The place was fully packed even after we returned back 45 minutes later and the fact that we visited this outlet on Friday late evening (close to 10:00 pm) might be a factor as well.

We went inside and a male waiter greeted us in Japanese and asked how many people in our party. He directed to us to go inside and after passing by guest tables, we realized that we were seated in an area using Japanese style tables (sat down on the floor where we could hang our feet underneath the table). They asked us to take off our shoes, put them in a bag and carry them with us to our tables.

The area was really smokey and it was really loud but we both decided to give it a try as their seafood looked very tempting. Plus, we were really hungry and we had to find something decent to eat. Once we sat down, the waiter handed us their menu, all written in Japanese which we didn't understand. When we asked for their English menu, they handed over an iPad where we could find all menu in English and placed our order by using the same device.

In the iPad, they also indicated which item was their best seller starting from # 1 down to the bottom of the list which was quite handy for tourists like us. It took us almost 15 minutes to decide which ones we would like to have. We ordered their best seller item (don't remember what they call it but it was like a creamy thing in a crab shell but the taste was really delicious). We also ordered their best seller clams.

All our orders were served within 7 minutes (very quick considering the restaurant was fully packed). However, it took us more than 10 minutes to figure out on how to grill those live clams and eat them. We had to ask the waiters few times to help us with the grill stove and it was not really an easy job to do as they moved very fast/quickly.

Overall, it was quite a fun experience for both of us this time. Food taste was really delicious although it was not cheap either. Will we return back to this restaurant ? Definitely but we have to find a time where they are not really crowded and we really prefer to seat in a normal table (sit down in a normal chair) next time.

Situated in the restaurant area of Taito, this restaurant stands out because it is open 24 hours a day. That, accompanied by the almost full dining area, gave me an indication of what I was in for.

The menu is extensive, with many traditional Japanese dishes. Some cooked and some requiring cooking on the small, gas stove at your dining place. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available.

You are greeted at the door and then promptly seated. Your order is taken reasonably quickly and food starts to appear quite rapidly.

All the dishes I tried were tasty and well-proportioned.

Pricing was reasonable.

Smoking and non-smoking areas available.

Highly recommended.

This place is recommended by friends. We were a group of 6 larger size than typical Japanese and we find it difficult to fit into a normal Japanese table for 6 but that is about the maximum number of people they can cater for one table. The place is smoky and the service is not great but efficient. We had to wave for attention one too many times. They don't speak English so we had to to use gestures and finger pointing. No issues ordering food. We had a wide variety of food from sashimi, grilled octopus, etc but in the end, we advise you to just go for the grill crabs. They are beautifully presented and you place it on the grill. When cooked, it emits an aroma. It is really yummy. We had very closed fellowship but the food is good, decent and the grill crabs are the star. I would probably go there with just four people or less and eat more of the crabs. Wear clothes that don't absorb smoke and take more of wet wipes.

I go to Isomaru Suisan (磯丸水産) at least once a month, sometimes more. I ALWAYS get the kani-miso (grilled crab). It looks strange but it's seriously my favorite Japanese dish, but ONLY from Isomaru. They prepare it in a way that makes it taste totally different from anywhere else. If you've never eaten this I highly recommend you try it. If you look around you'll see Japanese guests with those crab heads stacked 10-20 high. Every Japanese person knows Isomaru is the best for kani-miso.

As for the restaurant itself, it's not super clean but it's got an old-fashioned atmosphere and offers a unique experience. It can get pretty loud and smokey in there at rush hour, but after a few drinks you'll be as loud as the rest. Service has always been quick and courteous albeit a little rushed if there's a lot of customers. The rest of their seafood is tasty although it's not the freshest, and the price is reasonable for the portion size. The menu is in Japanese but everything has pictures so you can just point to what you want if you can't speak the language.

I prefer this location because it's in a fun neighborhood, it's easy to access and it usually has less people in it, but you can go to any Isomaru for basically the same experience. There are two restaurants on the same block, if one is full just walk down to the next one.

Definitely try the kani-miso, you won't be disappointed!

Isomaru has a lot of branches all over Japan and most of them opens 24 hrs. We didn't plan to eat here but many other places nearby were closed already amid New Years holidays. It isn't the cheapest or freshest grilled seafood place but you get what you expect. A lot of local people so you can't really go wrong with that. The stuffed crab shell is a must try!
