Just got back from the "Making Tracks" program at Northern Edge Algonquin - my husband and I both *really* enjoyed it! While it's cold with a bit of snow in Toronto now, we haven't had much winter weather so far this year, so figured we'd head up north to get some winter activities in and we sure did that. From snow shoeing to x-country skiing and a little bit of skating - we were on the go all day.

We were well 'fuelled' with fantastic food! Their chef is really amazing and uses locally grown / raised ingredients as much as possible.

We were in one of the studio cabins - it's pretty basic but clean and warm and lots of space (only suggestion for improvement here would be a few more hooks to hang clothes on to dry out after the day's activities).

Kim and Jeff were our guides and they were pretty amazing too! Very friendly and their knowledge of the area and stories shared while guiding the activities was really interesting.

Overall this was a really excellent getaway and one we'll likely do again!

Hi Deirdre,
Thank you for visiting and sharing backcountry winter adventures with us at the Edge.
You'll be happy to know that this week we're putting indoor clothes lines into the studio cabins to help folks dry their things after playing in the snow.

How's that for responding to guest needs? It's how we roll in Winter, Ontario, Canada!
We look forward to hosting you again in the future.

All the best,
Todd.

We had a super experience at Northern Edge. Jeff and Kim were so down to earth that we didn't feel self conscious about our limited outdoorseyness. Although our Wolf call wasn't successful it was a nice outing to learn about the park and wolves. We learnt to canoe and were also able to join the group canoeing activity. We also paddle boarded. The location was brilliant. we stayed in a cabin with a toilet. It was spacious and comfy. Our compost toilet was clean and did not smell. There is a main area with showers and flush toilets where drinks and snacks are available all day. The meals are served in the main house where the owners live. One of the highlights of our stay was the amazing and inventive meals created by Chef Gregor. Absolutely outstanding. We have noted that the website has been updated since we stayed and now does give information about the food. We had a number of questions when we were first booking but luckily we had super service on the live chat which resulted in us booking immediately. We particularly enjoyed the evening where we cooked pizzas outdoors and Kim and Jeff told us about life in the outdoors and showed us bones, teeth etc of local animals. The other guests were really nice and mealtimes and activities were fun and friendly. The sauna was an unexpected treat. The only suggestions would be that one afternoon a thunderstorm hitband there were no activities for the rest of the day so it might have been nice for an organised activity in Points North and secondly more gear available in the shop as we would have bought more had there were only a couple of each style available.
We really enjoyed our stay.

We arrived on Friday morning and learned how to mush from the Head Dog Masher, Mr Ed. A lovely guy and the dogs were well fed and looked after. And the rest? Food wonderful, check. Staff friendly, knowledgable, hardworking and fun to be with, check. A range of great activities, including snowshoeing, skiing, walking, drumming, sauna and snow diving, recipe swapping and local beer and wine sampling - all aided by sumptuous meals lovingly cooked using local fresh ingredients by Greg. Great that local growers and farmers are being supported!

Kim and Jeff made us feel so welcome - thanks to all the team at Northern Edge, we will be back!

Pros:
1. AMAZING food. The chef was absolutely amazing, and created superb vegan options for myself and my partner. Each and every meal was well thought out, hearty, locally sourced, and delicious.

2. The schedule was a great pace and very accommodating. We had the choice of outdoor activities (skating, cross country skiing, snowshoeing) We even had the opportunity to take an extra trip alone around the snowshoe train at the end of the third day, after the other guests had left.

3. It is a great opportunity to meet new and interesting people that share a common love of nature and outdoor activities.

4. Beautiful property!

Cons:
1. The package appeared to include accommodations in a private cabin, but this wasn't the case. We stayed in a room that was off of the main dining area, and the door had no way to lock from the outside. I believe that the door could close from the inside, but the wood on the door was swollen and the lock mechanism wasn't connection so we couldn't lock the door. We would have preferred the cabin.

2. Outside alcohol is not permitted and is not sold on site. On the second evening, some beer and wine was provided, but it would be nice to have the chance to purchase wine with meals, or have the ability to bring our own.

Overall: A great experience that I would do again in a heart beat! Also a great value.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the cabins not in the dining lodge.

Hello Nicole,
Thank you for taking the time to share with others your experience at Northern Edge Algonquin. We'll be sure to share your thoughts with the team. Greg certainly takes great great care of guests with special food needs and Kim and Jeff are professional caring guides helping guests explore our Algonquin landscape.

For twenty years we've hosted guests without locks on doors and this is true for all our cabins. Although doors can be locked from the inside there have never been keys to our doors. I guess it's more like having guests stay at our home than a hotel.

We serve complimentary servings of locally-brewed Highlander Ales and Viewpointe Estate Wines with most programs at meal times. Some guests enjoy a second free serving, but alcohol is presented and appreciated as an accent to mealtime. Like at many resorts outside alcohol is not permitted. In short, our remote forested location, trails, and program activities that take place day or night need to be delivered in a safe manner.

We had quite a full house during your Making Tracks visit, and as with many accommodation providers our accommodation is allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Although many guests prefer staying in one of our mainhouse guest rooms, we recognize many folks prefer our private cozy forest cabins. When these cabins aren't available we do our best to suggest alternative travel dates. As our programs are quite popular, it is always best for guests to book early to ensure they get cabin they prefer.

We hope to see you again soon.

Todd.

We enjoyed every moment of our Making Tracks getaway to Northern Edge. From our welcome from Jeff (our amazing guide for all things ourdoorsy), to the incredible dog sledding adventure with Ed, to the wildlife sightings, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and jumping in the snow after luxuriating in the Finnish sauna, our adventure was amazing. We loved the "off the grid" appeal of the facilities (only solar power so don't expect the Hilton and there is no wifi) which was further enhanced by the glowing fireplaces throughout, the cosy slippers waiting to warm some toes, the rustic decor of the lodging. (Be prepared for using nonflush toilets - but they don't smell in the least - and there are regular toilets and hot running water in the lodge for those who prefer the comfort of home.) So we had no idea that Chef Gregory was a magician at creating fabulous meals from his tiny kitchen overlooking the snow covered lake. He had his guests drooling with anticipation as he recited before each meal the local ingredients (from herbs to meats, fresh pressed basil oil to Scotch ale) that composed his menu of organic delights. His passion for the environment and partnering with local growers make each meal an adventure in its own right. And he met each dietary request with ease, including glutin-free and vegan. Everyone raved over each meal. And so we were all content to contribute to the technology free environment by hand washing our dishes in hot sudsy well water, laughing with our new friends over drying and putting away techniques. Ending the day with a cup of their incredible blend of organic coffee or hot chocolate, especially after a late afternoon skate on the pond or a game of cards with other visitors, was an added bonus. Kim and Jeff, who run all the program while the owners are away, are absolutely incredible. I highly recommend this winter adventure to anyone who loves the great outdoors.

Room Tip: Hot running water and flushing toilets are in the lodge. Cabins provide authentic and rustic experience.
