This was one of the best beaches and with Lola's right there, it was a perfect place for the guys who wanted surf and the women who wanted cocktails. Long sandy stretches of beach provide options for laying out, surfing, walking and shell searching. We had a driver take us which I preferred as it could be hard to find if you don't know how to navigate the Costa Rican roads well. This place is great for kids to, they can run around freely and enjoy everything the beach and Lola's has to offer. The food was really good as well, our favorite were the nachos and crispy tacos. You can't leave without having a Lolajito, wow, one of the best drinks we've ever had. We couldn't stop ordering them! Overall, we highly recommend this as a day trip, don't rush it and enjoy relaxing.

Playa Avellanas is a really nice beach. If it gets to crowded in surfing at Tamarindo you can go there easily withing 25 minutes. There is also a really nice bar (Lola's)

The only place we went was out to Cabinas de Las Olas to surf. We used GPS to get there from Tamarindo. Most of the way you will travel on unpaved roads and you think the GPS is wrong. It wasn't but just not updated because some roads are now private resort roads. The minute we turned down the road to the cabins(hotel) we saw howler monkeys in the trees. When we parked in the lot, they crossed to a big tree in the parking lot so we got to see whole family of them with many of the female holding their babies on their back as they moved in the tree to eat. They are notorious for throwing poop at you but they let us watch from under the tree and did not pay much attention to us. There are 8-10 cabins, a little restaurant bar, a pavilion with table tennis and games for the people staying there(all surfers), and a little surf shop. People in the restaurant friendly and even opebned the shop for my son to get a t-shirt. He stayed there last year so knew everyone there. You have to walk over a long rickety-scary( to me) boardwalk across the mangrove to get to the beach. Beach was pretty narrow at high tide. Waves can be 18 ft. at timwes but were pretty Florida size when we were there. It was long board paradise the day we were there.

went to Lolas' at Avellanes and surfed and swam all day. Had lunch at Lolas and it was excellent; fresh tuna sandwich, mixed fruit juice and friendly , happy service. The beach is great for surfing, swiming, sunbathing, beach combing or just "hanging" at Lolas with a tall cool one!

The beach was beautiful and endless. The surf was pretty big, intermediate - advanced. Good to go with an instructor or if not, definitely ask the surfing locals before you surf - there are some rocks that will be dangerous to you if you duck dive especially in low tide. The restaurant - Lola`s was gorgeous and everything you picture when you think of a local beach restaurant. We didnt have to worry about thieves here, but heard you should watch your things closely. We tipped the guy in the parking lot to park our car, there was no set price. Bit of a bumpy road to get here and shade is minimal after the dunes.
