“Jungle retreat with views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 February 2014

I stayed six nights with 3 friends. We loved how quiet and beautiful the house and property were. Everywhere you look is enchantment and beauty. We loved being able to cook our meals in the efficient kitchen. It is fun to eat out at the many fine options, but the hustle, bustle gets tiresome and enjoying simple, relaxing meals at "home" is such a bonus on a vacation. Nita was extraordinary in her responsiveness and willingness to inform us of all of the wonderful sites and things to do in the area. It is so hard to plan a trip long distance and we felt really aware of what there was to do when we arrived. We were active every day hiking, kayaking, and horseback riding. All were fabulous. The Ecozoo in El Castillo was a real treat and so different than any "zoo" I had visited before. El Castillo is close enough to walk to and we enjoyed leaving the car at "home" when we could to stay as close as possible to the land and people. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make our stay more enjoyable. El Castillo is off the main tourist track at La Fortuna, so we felt more relaxed and closer to the culture.

I loved my little corner of paradise for the week I was there. The views of Lake Arenal in one direction and of the volcano in another were sublime. Tucked away in a secluded corner of the jungle, the guest house is surrounded by howler monkeys making their presence known. Yet the lodging is close enough to El Castillo and La Fortuna to easily enjoy the many wonders of this part of Costa Rica. I enjoy an active vacation but when I was back at my lodgings I relished being pampered by the natural beauty of the place. Play hard but don't forget to save a little time to laze in the hammock in the shadow of Volcán Arenal while cooled by the fresh mountain breezes. The guest house is clean, roomy and inviting. It felt like home right off the bat. Don't forget to meander down the jungle trail on the property to your own private soaking pool as the water drains from the mountain rains. I enjoyed that a lot. Nice to know there are still some places in Costa Rica where you can get away from a herd of other visitors. It really added to the natural adventure of the vacation. What a wonderful way to enjoy the Tico lifestyle. I even lucked out and enjoyed a gathering of toucans in the trees surrounding the Hacienda one day during my stay. Take binoculars if you have them. One of the best vacations of my life.

We stayed 2 nights at Encantada Guest House while our daughter visited us in Costa Rica. The house is wonderful, clean and spacious, and the grounds are just amazing! We had birds, animals and beautiful weather. The view of Volcan Arenal is spectacular and unobstructed. There are eateries in the area, as well as the volcano observatory and several hot springs. The best part of the stay was the beautiful path through the forest to the crystal mountain spring complete with fish and frogs! We would not hesitate to stay again or recommend it to our friends.

Room Tip: All bedrooms face the volcano, so you geta spectacular view always.

Our family of four, with college age kids visited Hacienda Encantada December 18-21, 2013. The house is charming and the grounds are amazing. As a garden enthusiast, I really enjoyed the diversity and color of plantings surrounding the house. Hummingbirds constantly flittered around the gardens as do butterflies and birds. The private trail down to the creek rivals any rainforest trail. The volcano is quite visible on the hammock side of the house. Since the house is high on a hill, the views are wonderful. There are no neighbors close by creating a very tranquil experience. There is a security system but we never had any concerns. We saw mothers with children walking nearby but not much else. It is a challenge up to the house from the main road but easily done in an SUV and we never flipped it over to 4 wheel drive. The house was very comfortable and we did not even use the fans at night. The house is equipped with separate high windows with screens and burglar bars that are left open to cool the house. We had no bug problems. Both bedrooms have adequate space with dressers and good lighting. One bedroom has a queen bed and the other has two twin beds. The bathroom is quite large and pleasant. The DVD collection is huge and has something for everyone. . We had excellent wifi and tv reception. The owners "Kemsley Family Favorites" which is a guide to the area is excellent. Nita's willingness to answer email after email and make reservations for us was priceless. Our trip was short but perfect. Sky Adventures is near the property. We did the fabulous walk through the rainforest including numerous hanging bridges, the tram and Ziplines. It is an excellent and well maintained facility. We highly recommend it. The guides are very professional and friendly. We rode horses with Leeander which was delightful and an opportunity to ride through the jungle, a river, down to the lake and up high with fabulous views. Leeander graciously took pictures of us. We went to the hot springs at Los Lagos Spa and Resort. We enjoyed the springs and the slides but would pass on the buffet next time . We just loved the food at the local sodas in Costa rica as well as the people. (and the prices at sodas are so low). In La Fortuna we really enjoyed the Kemsley's recommendation La Casa de Hormigas. Our number one family favorite "soda" was Mimi's in Canas. The roasted chicken is perfect and you can pick your sides. A bakery/deli is next door. The drive around the lake was beautiful and we were stopped by approximately 40 coati leisurely crossing the road. Michael, Hacienda Encantada's caretaker was readily available and pleasant. All in all, a wonderful visitor experience and perfect for those who prefer something much more special than a hotel room.

Beautiful location, great accommodations, super clean. My kids loved all the wildlife, and exploring the rainforest trails. And I got to relax in a hammock and reconnect with a book while enjoying the great view. Also having a full kitchen saved us a lot of money on food that we then spent on local attractions. Totally would recommend it. Great family vacation for a great price. Can't wait to go back.
