Our company booked us here for an extended stay (5 weeks) when it was formerly Park Plaza Tyrrelstown back in '97. Once we arrived, we thought it would be nicer to stay in a downtown apartment, but the morning commute back to Ballycoolin would have been horrendous!

The hotel is a nice place to stay, complete with all amenities except swimming pool (back in /97). Their breakfast buffet guaranteed we all gained at least 5lbs on our stay. The restaurant is pricey but has a decent menu. We ate lunch at work in Ballycoolin and headed to the Tyrrelstown Shopping Centre for take-a-way, an occassional sit-down dinner, or to the grocery for snacks to munch on back in our rooms. Their pub stayed open late so we could enjoy a few pints after a long day at work.

We saw mostly business travelers on our stay, but on the weekends, we saw occassional wedding guests or guests on holiday on a motorcoach tour.

Since we were on extended stay, the management and staff were very attentive of our needs and special requests, like room changes, housekeeping supplies, messages, internet connectivity, etc.

Although the property is way out in the western suburbs, the Dublin bus or taxi can whisk you away to Blanchardstown mall or city centre for sightseeing.

Overall, the hotel is great for business or holiday away from the city center in the Emerald Isle!

(business trip Aug-Sep 2007)

Room tip: if staying for more than a few days, and off-peak season and if available, ask for an upgrade. One of our colleagues had a jr suite on the 5th floor for all 5 weeks in Aug-Sep for the same price as our standard rooms!

Why is the price of drinks more expensive in the function bar (no price list displayed &receipts not given to customers unless you ask) than the hotel bar? The bar menu changes @ 5pm - food items remain the same but prices more expensive -tables dirty/ food cold & bland/service slow/ understaffed/ bar manager nice chap and a good waiter

New years eve was a total disaster for €49 - buffet had limited choice- food was cold- some guests very intimidating - bar understaffed for a busy night - fights outside - broken glass on the dance floor - had to wait in line to complain - noisy night on our corridor and someone got sick in the lift

Also did not get my wake up call or my taxi booked as requested - reception staff giggled then sighed - did not even enquire about my stay & the manager 'was busy setting up the restaurant' so missed him

4 stars for disappointing experience - skip breakfast it's dismal @ best

Room tip: Try another hotel !

Dear Guest,

I was disappointed to learn of your recent experience here on New Year’s Eve. Let me re assure that all our prices in all areas are displayed in full and it is our policy to issue receipts with all food & beverage items served. Our bar menu does indeed change and any dishes that are carried through from the day menu to the night menu are carried through at the same price. Other than some selected popular items the two menus are entirely different in content.
Rest assured every effort was made to control the other guests who impacted on your stay and I apologise that the actions of others effected your enjoyment on the night and we have take steps to prevent this re-occurring . Thank you for your feedback.

Yours Sincerely,

Declan Curtis

We spent the weekend here and the hotel is lovely and modern and rooms are very clean. All of the staff we dealt with over the weekend were very friendly and helpful also. The problems we had were with the restaurant only. The breakfast was probably the worst buffet we have ever had in a hotel - there were several complaints as there was nothing left other than a few mushrooms at 10:10 on Saturday when breakfast only finished at 10:30. It was slightly better on the Sunday morning. The food at dinner was nice, however they got our order completely wrong. The waitress was so nice however we didnt want to complain and send it back and also due to the time we had to wait for it we thought it would be cold by the time it came back again. We got the impression over the weekend that it was just one chef working there who was run off his feet and that's why there were problems with the food. Having said all of that we would probably go back again as for a package deal it was still good value, just not 4 star. If you don't drive it is very out of the way but that was not a problem for us.

Room tip: The junior suites are nothing like the pictures - I think that must be the superior suite. Very small sitting room with just a 2 seater sofa in the junior suite.

Can't really complain about the room as it was modern, well decorated and comfortable.

The only problem was the large dirty stain above the TV in the room, which could have been from a recent leak.

Breakfast was a decent buffet style effort.

Aside from that, we (party of 4 adults and 1 child) had booked in for the advertised NYE Gala Dinner, which was to be a buffet 4 course meal, followed by entertainment, a glass of champagne at midnight and more music etc.

I had called the hotel reception earlier in the day and enquired as to what time dinner would be served - NOTE: I had read the advertisement incorrectly and had presumed that we would be receiving a served/sit down dinner. Regardless, the receptionist informed me that dinner would be served at between 8pm-10pm.

We arrived into the dinner hall at approx 8.30pm and were delayed in being seated as the duty manager who was seating parties was taking a complaint from a very irate guest. After about 10 minutes waiting to be seated, we moved to find our own table. At this point the manager left a table where he'd been receiving more complaints, met us and sat us at our table - pointing to the buffet tables at the top of the room and explaining that we'd be serving ourselves.

Issues:

As we arrived at 08:40pm, the buffet tables were a bit chaotic, with some plates half or nearly empty.

All of the food, without exception was luke warm at best or cold.

There was no child's food available, and we found out after 20 mins that you'd to order that separately.

There was no potato or chips available, again needed to be ordered separately - when it did arrive, the dish of mash potato was exactly half hot and half cold (how that happened?!).

On 3 separate occasions I had to go looking for staff to find out what was going on.

There was no dedicated staff member for the buffet tables, so some guest's children made it their business to help themselves, handling a lot of the starters and desserts before kindly returning it to the buffet table.

Overall it was one of the most stressful and annoying dinners I've had in my life. A country pub would've made a better effort.

I cannot fault the staff (when I could find them) as they were very friendly and helpful. They were however dealing with dozens of complaining guests.

We heard stories during the night of the hotel comp'ing the cost of pizzas to be delivered to one table, with other tables receiving complimentary bottles of wine and promises of part refunds etc.

During the night (2am - 9am) there was a huge amount of noice on our floor, with drunken guests knocking on random doors (including ours on a couple of occasions). I don't know what Hotel Mgt could have done about this considering the night that it was, but it made the stay that bit more uncomfortable.

The next morning, I had a short chat with the duty manager and we were compensated to a certain extent. I wasn't going to argue more as I was exhausted, and to be fair felt bad for the man.

Suffice to say that had we known what was awaiting us with this event, we would not have chosen this hotel. We would have also advised anyone who would listen not to chose this hotel either. It may well be a nice place for the other 364 days of the year, but avoid on the 31st Dec.

I stayed on new years and have to say it was awful. I booked for my mother, myself and my 3 children, I was horrified to find just 1 bed in the room, when I notified staff I was told there's noThing they can do, so I was forced to sleep in an armchair. I wouldn't recomend this hotel to anyone.
