It's promoting the navy, I guess it should only be free. Anyway, after an obligatory introductory... read more
The museum is near to HMAS Albatross base, Its well worth a visit, you will need a car to drive there but its only a short drive from Nowra, about 10 minutes. The Museum has lots of great displays and aircrafts a great day out . The café attached to the Museum is good, but check opening hours.
A great collection of aircraft from early days to the current. Great view over the operating airfield of Albatross navy base
For the cost of $10 it was worth every cent and more .
Some much history in one hanger.
The gentleman at the counter couldn't have been more helpful.
Displays were amazing as were the videos playing .
I'm so glad I made the drive , which is not far from Nowra and easy to find .
Follow the signs to HMAS Albatross.
It is right near the gates of the HMAS Albatross base run by the Royal Australian Navy. The museum has a wide display of aircraft and naval history. It is more naval aircraft that the actual air force. Really interesting to people interested in all things military.
I went with my husband as he tags along with me to places I'm sure he doesn't want to go. So I'm upfront to admit my review will reflect that I'm not a buff on this type of exhibition. We also arrived at 2 pm having not stopped to eat as we were told there was a cafe. We were not told it closed at 2. So by the time we bought our tickets you guessed it no cafe.
Despite this it was interesting looking at our naval history. I think children could learn a lot from this place. I knew that for planes and helicopters to fit on ships that they had modifications it was interesting looking at how the wings fold and the blades fold etc. it was also interesting to see changes in helmets etc over the years. So despite me going along groaning I did find it very interesting and feeling glad I went. The kids would love the flight simulator. Women if you want a go don't wear a longer straight skirt. I would have loved a go but wished I had have worn jeans so I could get in. As I said if you want to catch the cafe go before 2 pm it is lovely overlooking the airfield. Looking at the padlocked fridges I'm sure if the food tastes as good as it looks it would be great. For poor planners like us there was a drink and chip machine outside. No food allowed inside. I'm pretty sure kids were free. I'm pretty sure it is only adults that pay. That money goes to the running of the museum. Don't get fooled like I did thinking the art gallery wasn't open. It was in darkness and I walked back. My husband being my husband decided no light was going to stop him as he got close the lights came on as he tripped the sensor.
This was a fantastic centre with great aircrafts, equipment and history - really enjoyable afternoon
