We were 4 couples renting this beautifully kept ancient dwelling for 1 week. Even after 7 days we hadn't seen everything this enchanting place had to offer.
The layout of this grand place was charming and a bit unusual. The main entrance was the 3rd floor with a massive living and dining room filled with interesting artifacts and antiques. The 4th and 5th floors housed the bedrooms and both had balconies where we spent most of our time. The view of the valley, Chiavari and the Ligurian Sea below was unforgettable.
We didn't spend much time in the 1st floor kitchen except to prepare food which we always brought up to eat on the 3rd floor balcony.
The grounds had a lovely ambience and beautifully kept gardens. Good hiking trails in the area.
A car is necessary because the castle is on a steep mountainside with hardly any amenities nearby. Walking too and from Chiavari would be challenging. There is a bus that comes by sporadically. A taxi costs 25€.
Chiavari is located halfway between Cinque Terre and Portofino. It's a charming town undiscovered by tourists. We spent a couple of days hiking Cinque Terre and other days swimming, eating and drinking our way along the Ligurian coast. So picturesque, so memorable.
The property manager was indispensable. She set up an in-house cooking class and made reservations for us. Thank you Angelica.
Very reasonable accommodation when split 4 ways.
Mereta Castle is an incredible place to stay! We had a great experience from the day we booked to the day we checked out. The place is surely a special accommodation, with beautiful furniture, specious bedrooms with comfortable beds, very large and well kept gardens, an amazing view that make you feel privileged. But for us, what made it truly special was the people there ; Roberto and Angelica! They went above and beyond to make us feel home, and we sure did. Thank you! We will never forget our stay at Castello Della Mereta!
