“Beautiful place, best bird flying ever, house a shell, great play barn”

At first sight this place was perfect. We arrived and paid £23ish for 4 adults and 1 child. First we went up to the play barn and were really impressed with this (us lot and my 4 year-old were the only people there - so we had the run of the place). There is soft play, toys, bikes and toilets. Also there is a small petting area with gineau pigs rabbits etc. Then we went to the bird flying viewing area - AND WE SAW THE BEST FLYING I'D EVER SEEN. We saw an amazing eagle owl, two serene red kites and lastly the most amazing bald eagle. It was really brilliant and very very impressive! The flyer was very informative, funny and interesting.
Then we went to the house and met Norman the guide. A lovelier man you'll never meet, but we didn't know the house was a shell. It was beautiful but not very interesting as there was nothing mentioned about it being a shell in any of the info, we just wandered around it on our own really.

This grand house was built over 300 years ago and is now a shell. However, a small guidebook provides its life history and gives a good insight into the lives of the people who lived there.

Part of the building has been restored and there is a good display of photographs in the small museum above the gift shop.

The magnificent main entrance gateway to the estate can be reached along a public footpath by the car park.

The location of Appuldurcombe holiday cottages is lovely and the exterior of the farmhouse annexe looked very promising but internally it had several problems. It was dated and basic but we didn't mind that, it was more the damp patches on the walls and ceilings, the small of mildew in the kitchen and the visiting slug that were a problem!
It wasn't really very clean. Kitchen surfaces and bath, toilet and basin were clean but the floors weren't ,especially under beds and in corners where there were dust balls and hair. The tiles in the bathroom were dirty. Kitchen utensils often had the previous occupant's food on them.
Customer service was not high on the owner's mind. When we arrived his main concern was getting good housekeeping cheque from us and not showing us round. He told us that decorators would be painting windows externally from Monday with no assurance that disruption would be minimal or offer of compensation when we had paid top rate. Sure enough they were outside at 8am- hardly relaxing! We complained and were asked "why aren't you going to go out anyway" - not really the point. In the end he did agree to only paint when we were out but I thought this assurance should have been made at the beginning rather than the "lump it or like it" attitude we got.
His only comment when we told him about the slug was "nice"!! We were guests only to bring money in - there was no pride in customer service.
