I booked this at the last minute after cancelling on another B & B which charged higher and gave lesser. Sadly the location was on top of a hill and not beside the lake. So you will need to walk down a slope and walk 10 min to reach the lake so you can photograph Mt Fuji.
However if you are there on leisure just to enjoy the serenity of this place, then this B & B is good for you. There is a living room area for its guests which is lovely. Plenty of magazines to read, a TV, board games and hot water so you can make coffee and tea which are complimentary. You can also buy cup noodles and make a snack with the hot water provided.
But there is good value in this B & B. They provide towels and even toothbrush and small toothpaste for free. This was the low period so we were the only guests in the B & B. That was good for us. The room itself was reasonable in size and came with twin beds. Unfortunately it's hard to find double beds in B & B in Yamanakako.
We had room 31 which has the best view of Mt Fuji right outside your large window. It has a small TV and heater from the aircon plus a sink to brush your teeth. The shared bathroom is also quite good. You can soak in the tub and see Mt Fuji outside the window. But the bathroom gets a bit cold so be warned. There is heater everywhere (in the aircon and portable ones) though the heater in the bathroom isn't really effective but you'll get over it once the hot water comes on.
The service is impeccable. The owner Chiharu-san was very nice to us. Maybe its because we were the only guests but he offered to drive us anywhere around the lake anytime. He could also pick us up to return back if we were outside. So he did drive us to a nice photo spot quite a distant away. But it was cloudy and Mt Fuji was not visible.
The breakfast is pretty amazing too. Eggs, ham, sausage and an amazingly fresh salad plus yogurt and breads and juice and coffee/tea. They have a very cute dog and they are very professional about not letting the dog anywhere near the guests area though we really wouldn't mind. No funny animal smell either. Surprisingly, no dog fur (on the floor that catches on to your socks) either.
The only bad side about this place is that it has a lot of insects - beetles, ladybugs, spiders. Reason is that this house is in a forest area so it is inevitable to have these insects invading the property. But they don't really bother you so that's okay.
I'd recommend anyone who cannot speak Japanese to book this accomodation. It is easier to book since they have email and website unlike many others who either are overpriced or cannot speak English or requires a booking through phone.
You can only find 2 restaurants near this B & B. You will need to either walk real far or get a bus or get the owner to drive you out. You can also book dinner with the B & B as they offer dinner but it is a bit pricey at almost 3000yen. Alternatively you can buy food and take them back to eat later.
Yamanakako is a quiet small village. No big activity. Slow paced. Nothing exciting. Maybe even a bit boring. But what is nice is that have a beautiful lake and gorgeous view of Mt Fuji, reflecting on the lake. It is a great photo place for photographers.
