Owner description: A catch destined for the Connemara Smokehouse, the irresistible aroma is often carried on soft breezes throughout the countryside. It assails your senses when near Ballyconneely. Connemara Smoked Salmon, on brown soda bread. Unique to Ireland. The Connemara Smokehouse is located right on the water’s edge at Bunowen Pier, and the surrounding area has exceptional views of the Twelve Bens mountain range, the castle of Connaught’s historic Pirate Queen, Grainne Mhoal (Grace O’Malley). It is also renowned for its breeding of the world famous Connemara Pony which can be seen in fields towards the Smokehouse. This area contains some of the most tranquil, unspoilt and rugged landscapes with beautiful clear water and sandy beaches. Smokehouse Tours seasonally during the summer months June, July and August (FRENCH) Tuesday & Thursday at 3pm sharp! (ENGLISH)Wednesday at 3pm sharp! Booking is advisable. We also welcome Group Tours & School Groups all year round by appointment only. In our Smokehouse Tour you will watch Graham or Nicolas hand fillet and traditionally prepare the salmon, explain the salting and smoking techniques, then show the hand slicing and packing of the finished product. You will enjoy a tasting of our fantastic smoked salmon. We are sure you will then want to buy some to take home, or to eat while you are here on holiday or to send to friends and family as a gift. It is fun, educational, and delicious.

Visited last week. The passion Graham has for the products he smokes comes over in bucket loads. The demonstration and explanation is comprehensive, the samples are to dye for. Can't wait for the order to arrive. All the staff are friendly and helpful.

While touring Ireland our guide pointed out this place. We asked if we could stop and he said sure, not knowing if they were open, or if they gave tours. We happened to visit in their off-season. I explained that i regularly catch and smoke fish in the United States, and wanted to see how the experts did it. They were most gracious in answering my questions on wood, temperature, processing, etc. they even brought out samples of smoked salmon and mackerel for us to try. We told them we couldnt buy anything as we were just passing through and they still spent time with us. My smoked fish will never be as good as what they have here, but i did pick up some tips that will help. Not the least of those tips would most certainly be how to treat people. Thank you so much for your time and hospitality. Without a doubt, the best smoked fish i ever had. I only wish i had something to store the fish in while traveling in Ireland.

This place is on the edge of the world as is I guess most of the Wild Atlantic Way.

The scent of smoke as you go in is so seductive.

However!
We didn't buy because they only had frozen - their packaging is stunningly superb and the food will keep but we didn't want to risk it. Not sure if unfrozen is available.

On the food
Our tasting was dreamy beyond belief. Brilliant succulent smoked mackerel and of course the smoked salmon.... We didn't get to taste the tuna but looking the frozen packs it was mouthwatering. If they weren't frozen we would have eaten the kippers there and then!

A word of caution
Go to the cash point - this most excellent produce was a bit beyond our budget

A large group of us had the tour and explanation by Nicola and it was very interesting and informative. I don't think any of us will ever eat farmed salmon ever again!

A group of us attended the smokehouse tour in English today and I have to say it's not easy to entertain a group of people that range in age from 6 to 70 but it certainly happened here. From the moment that Graham started sharpening his knife and started talking until we all tasted the final product we were all engaged fully in what we were being shown. Anyone who wanted to ask questions got their turn and we were all happy with our answers and learning about this traditional method of smoking salmon. I have to say prior to this visit I never gave it much thought but certainly after today and getting to taste the product I have new found admiration for the whole chain involved in this process, from the fishermen, the staff in processing and packing right down to the office staff looking after deliveries. This smokehouse is set right on the edge of the Atlantic ocean so a walk in the beach was a must afterwards and after our afternoon touring we quite happily ate our way through one of their award winning products the honey roast salmon . The staff were all very friendly and came across clearly that they certainly believe and pride themselves in their products. We will definitely be placing an order online on our return home and popping in for another cheeky sample on our next visit to the west of Ireland !
