Family run lodge with clean comfortable rooms and Ken is the best Ski instructor I ever had. Dinner is delicious with generous portions of food. Left some items behind and they mailed back to my home country without charge. Highly recommend!

We loved our one week stay at Villa Alpen and would definitely come back. The family are so incredibly helpful, warm and welcoming. The Captain looked after us very well.

Dinner was a communal affair - a delicious traditional Japanese feast with many different dishes each night, cooked by the Captain's wife. We spent each night at the bar afterwards, chatting to Ken (Captain's son) and playing cards by the fireplace. They also have different kinds of umeshu for you to try.

Location is great - right next to the ski lifts or a short walk from the bus stop if you want to start your day at another mountain.

Rooms are a bit old school but very spacious, comfortable and warm - we had twin beds with a little tatami area for our gear, a small table with a thermos of hot water and tea. Our room had a toilet and sink. Bathing was done in the onsen in the basement - a great Japanese experience and so nice to sit in pool of hot water after a long, cold day out on the slopes.

Ken also has a lot of ski and snowboard experience and helped me fix up my board with all his tools. One of my friends had a sore throat and he even offered to pick up something from the store for it!

There were a few couples, solos and families with small children who were there as well. There are boardgames etc at the small bar / restaurant. All family-run.

A really amazing trip - definitely stay here while you're at the snow! Great value and a memorable experience thanks to such a kind family!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view out front, facing the slopes! Great to see the snow levels and lifts in the morning.

* Low Cost accomodations
* Only a few rooms have bathing facilities, otherwise there is a public bathing/Onsen in Basement
* Japanese and Western Style Rooms
* Food was fresh and very good. Purchased daily and planned in advance that morning. No menu, but they were able to make some alterations due to food intolerances.
* On site ski rental
* On site Bar/Lounge with fireplace - cozy lounge feel
* Sun valley is very quiet, nothing really to do other than ski and stay at hotel. If you have a car, then you have more options.
* The owners were very nice people and it is a true family run operation.
* The hotel is very old and could use some attention, but the owners made for a unique experience. I would not say it was unsanitary and I could not smell any mold. I have a very sensitive nose and am allergic to mold spores. This is not a luxury hotel.

Room Tip: Corner rooms have full bathroom with shower and tub.

Without question the absolute worst hotel I have ever stayed in. When you walk in the entrance the smell of mold & mildew will dominate your senses and it will continue for your entire stay in this dilapidated dump.

The building is in total disrepair, nothing appears to have been updated (or cleaned for that matter) since the place was built 30-40 years ago. Peeling wallpaper, chipped/cracked floor tiles, old bars of soap from who knows how many previous guests & much more. There are crack houses on the lower east side of Manhattan that are nicer than this hotel.

The one star that I gave it is down to its location (right on the slopes at the base of the mountain), and the fact that the owners seem like nice people.

Stay away.

A lovely place that we found here on tripadvisor. We do highly recommend to others that are looking for a cozy place where the hosts will treat you like family!
Breakfast is small but satisfying, BUT dinner was incredible! Every night (we stayed 5 in total) had a different course menu. And no complaints, it was very delicious!
The downstairs onsen was a treat after a full day of snowboarding. If you have never stayed at a traditional Japanese setting, it may bit a bit different for you, but it is comfortable. Luckily Ken allows you to book it for a family setting, so if you are not comfortable with bathing with other naked people, you can ask Ken to do a family reservation for you and your family.
As stated, it is a great wonderful place. The hosts were so kind to even go into town and find medicine for us. And we were able to rent snowboards for our trip. The boards were in great condition with great bindings!

The only reason I gave it a 4 is:
a bit far from the better slopes, so you either do need to catch the shuttle bus or make your way on the slopes. There is also no clean road to get to the bus stop; so it was a bit of a hassle to walk to and from the hotel with luggages. And the rooms are a bit dated, could use a bit of paint job.
