We booked 2 nights but had to cancel the second night and forfeited 50pct payment. Its early June but the warm weather came too early. There was no cold aircon the room, which they explained will only be turned on in Summer. We can only feel the breeze coming from a small opening in the window, and the room was so warm. The reception area is also non-aircon, so we decide forgo to the hotbath as we are already sweating! Dinner came in a very traditional set, nothing exciting about it. We missed the breakfast which started at 8am and finished at 9am for that day, do not understand why though they tried to explain in limited english. The hotel is rather remote, we drove one hour to the nearest convenience store as we are still hungry after the dinner. In all, I don't recommend if you go in June.

Overall, sadly the worst hotel during our trip. I’ll start with the good points:

- the food was excellent

However it lacked basic things which pretty much every hotel in Japan offers:

- WiFi not available in the room, only the lobby, come on it’s 2018!
- no complimentary shower gel, shampoo and conditioner available in the room.
- wallpaper falling off the wall in the room

Unfortunately I wouldn’t come back to this hotel.

We stayed for a night at this hotel as it is near the Blue Pond and the Waterfall is just right beside it. The room in the Annex doesn't have air conditioning and it was a little warm and stuffy until we opened the window. There is a netting to prevent the insects outside from entering.

The dinner and breakfast was included in the booking hence we didn't have issues with ordering and making reservations. The food was good, especially the breakfast where there was a huge spread of Japanese food.

The onsen was really great, especially the outdoor one. The best part of the Onsen is that it is only closed for 2 hours for the entire day, making it seem like it's never closed.

I would recommend this place to people looking to stay there for a night. There isn't much attractions nearby so it probably wouldn't be good for those who wants to do alot of sightseeing.

Room Tip: Rooms not in the Annex block are newer

During our Japan trip we wanted to experience a stay in a traditional Ryokan and thought, we should go right into the middle of the Daisetzusan National Park to find a layed back place that comes close to the "original" Ryokan experience. The question is now: what is original? The Yumoto Shirogane has a lot of rooms and also the flair of the 60ies among it. It is perched right among a small cliff over the Shirogane Waterfall and when visiting the Onsen you feel a little bit like in the woods since the Onsen face the river/cliff side. You can hear the waterfall while relaxing in the Onsen. The rooms are traditional japanese with futon mattresses, low table and chairs and tea ceremony set. They have a separate toilet and shower for those guests how didn't want to go to the Onsen for washing themselves. Futon beds could have been a bit more comfortable but I guess that's just what it is. The breakfast has everything a japanese stomach can desire (and handle at 7am) but also serves good coffee, fresh fruits and croissants for the more 'westernly' desires. Best thing though is that the Onsen is only closed from 9am to 11am(!) That measn you can call Onsen time 22/7 each day.
Now, coming back to the Ryokan experience: It might not be the Ryokan feeling you got a century or two ago but for modern Japan I guess this is what it comes down to. We were the only western people there at that time (late April). The rest of the hotel was filled up with Japanese people. So from what I can tell the Yumoto Shirogane-Onsen is a true japanese Ryokan experience of the 21st century and well worth a visit.

The hotel lacks a bit of ambiance. The lobby is rather cold and unwelcoming although the staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast and diner is only for hotel guests with half board or need to be booked one day in advance. You cannot just stroll in and dine if you feel like it. If you forgot to make your dining reservation you'll have to stick to the small lobby shop (open until 8pm), dine out on biru from the vending machines on the lower floor or try your luck in one of the other hotels next door which might have the same dining reservation policy like the Yumoto Shirogane though. WiFi is only available in the lobby area but we were lucky since we got a room just above the lobby and thus had WiFi in our room. Bottom line: hotel feels a bit sterile but offers a good Ryokan-Onsen experience on a larger scale. There might be better options elsewhere in Japan but not in such a setting with so many snow capped mountains and active volcanoes in the backdrop.

Room Tip: Close to lobby since then you might get lobby WiFi in the rooms

Hotel is located next to the waterfall and 5 minutes drive to blue pond. The Japanese style room (futon bed ) is big for 2 people and a beautiful view out to the trees. It snowed the night before so it was beautiful the next morning. Dinner and breakfast were included in the room package aND they were great.. The front desk and waiting staff speaks limited English but friendly and willing to help. The hotel is very secluded and a long way to drive to biei town so do take the half board room deal. Overall we had a great stay and will be back if we do visit biei again.
