My fiancé and I stayed at Skala again for 2 weeks during our second Hakuba snow trip. The family runs the lodge is so welcoming and accommodating. It made us feel like home. Despite the clean rooms and towels, awesome shower water pressure and fantastic drying room, the owner cooks up delicious Japanese fusion 5-course dinner (approx $35 per person). The massage chair in the living room is a hit after a day out on the slopes. A band also plays at Skala on certain weekends. It is a fantastic accommodation for family with children, couples and friends. We had met some really lovely people staying at Skala last year and this year.

Unfortunately, my fiancé sustained a back injury during this trip. We received tremendous amount of help from Osamu and Asako. We could not be thankful enough.

It is super convenient to get to different places from Skala. Free shuttle bus stops right outside the lodge to take you to Goryu and Hakuba 47 as well as free bus from Oak Forest around the corner (3 minute walk) goes to Happo, Iwatake and Sanosaka. It only takes about 10 minutes to walk to Echoland main street, where more free shuttle bus options are available for Tsugaike and others. Plenty of great dinning places along the Echoland main street, like Sakura Ramen, Mockingbird, Japanese tapas bar and kebab etc.....

We LOVE Hakuba and we LOVE Skala. We are returning next year for another snow trip!

Room Tip: Best to email Skala for room type and availability. We stayed in 3 different rooms from the past, and we are happy with all of them.

The family/owners are just wonderful. They went out of their way to help us on many occasions. The rooms are very clean, with super comfy beds. They were better than I expected. It's a 10 minute walk to Echoland with a bus stop right out the front to get to the slopes. Spicy Rentals collected our snow gear and the owners helped us pick it up when we arrived. We will stay here again when we return!

We had two clean and comfortable interconnecting rooms for my family of four (two teenagers) which was perfect. Osamu and his family were welcoming and generous, and assisted us in getting a refund for a one day tour we had booked that we had to change. They also recommended a great ski hire place, Spicey Rentals, as well as the best places to ski for the conditions. The free shuttle bus was minutes away and the best restaurants in Echoland only a 10 minute walk. We also had a beautiful five course meal cooked by Osamu's wife. The lounge area was a great place to relax and there were a few arguments over who was next to use the amazing massage chair!!! If we ski in Japan again we would love to stay here. Highly recommended.

2 nights at Skala for snowboarding trip was made all the better by staying here. Amazing service, so polite and thoughtful. 15 min walk through the woods for Happy One lifts and only 20 min bus ride to Happo47/Goryu which is free and leaves from the front door. Enjoyed sipping beers bought from the vending machine and listening to local trio on the piano, trumpet and drums in the lounge by the fire as we planned the next days' ride. Only 15 mins walk from Echo Land with great bars and restaurants. Took the recommendation for restaurant and loved it. Cannot rate this place high enough. We will return.

We stay in Grove Inn Skala just this Dec for 2 nights. The inn was nice and cozy, the owners are simply fantastic and service was impeccable. We had two lovely dinners cooked by the lady boss and her creme brûlée was out of this world! The owners offered to drive us to many places and their location is about 10 mins walk through the woods from the jumping station used in a Winter Olympics. They are surrounded by the magnificent views of the mountains. We really couldn't ask for more.
