Having stayed in a number of pubs over the years recommended by Trip Advisor reviewers and been disappointed with the experience, it was with trepidation that we booked and headed towards the Crown in Stoke By Nayland.
But there was absolutely nothing to worry about. This is a first class pub with very high standards of accommodation
The accommodation is in a separate building to the pub. In fact it's like a small hotel in it's own right. We did choose the best room - the executive room - but if you can afford to, I would strongly recommend it as it is the biggest pub room my wife and I have ever experienced. A massive bathroom - bath and walk-in shower. Then there's the very well stocked mini-bar, the very comfortable sofa and chair, the small patio outside with a table, and 2 chairs with lovely views over the Suffolk countryside - it really is hard to believe that your staying in a pub!
And then there is the pub itself. Very good selection of good beers (I'm very fussy with beer selections so hats off to the landlord for stocking local beers - too many pubs don't seem to support their local breweries these days). The wine list is extensive - moderately priced wine from various countries through to very expensive wines for that special occassion. And there's good descriptions of each wine as well. Then there's the food - a very good selection for all courses + a specials board. We stayed 2 nights and had 2 lovely evening meals. As for breakfast - I've stayed in hotels where trip advisors have raved about the breakfast and yet what we've experienced has been average. I can honestly say you are spoilt for choice at this pub. Obviously there's the full english which you'd expect (and is very nice too). But there's also a 3 egg omelette with a choice of 2 fillings (also strongly recommended), eggs florentine, eggs benedict, scrambled egg with salmon, bubble & squeak (!) - I could go on! And freshly squeezed orange juice.
And the service is top rate as well - plenty of people serving and all very pleasant with it.
So any negatives? I feel I have to mention something otherwise readers of this review will think I own shares in the place - so I'd say the temperature in the pub was very hot in the evening (yes I know it was August and yes you could eat outside as well) but some air conditioning inside would have been nice (or is it just a man thing?) and the pillows on the bed were slightly too small for the size of the bed (I did say I had to think of something negative!).
So in summary, we had a fabulous time at this pub, and I haven't even mentioned the evening turn down service, the quietness and beauty of the location, the fresh milk for your morning cup of tea in your room, the complimentary water, the TV + DVD player, the many magazines left for you to read - I'll stop there. Top Pub.
