“Wonderful B&B in the heart of Quarante”
Reviewed 5 December 2011

Having just returned from a short break in Quarante, I can confirm the accuracy of all the previous reviews of The Belvedere - beautifully renovated house, very comfortable rooms, constant hot water in en suite bathrooms. Each morning we had a very good breakfast at a time of our choosing. Although there are excellent restaurants close by, Nigel and Jenny also provided delicious, reasonably priced, dinners. As it was our first time in the area Nigel's advice on things to do and places to visit was greatly appreciated. He was a most helpful host and nothing appeared to be too much trouble. SM

It certainly has plenty to offer and we hope that your appetite was sufficiently stimulated that you might visit the region again. If you do please make sure to look us up. Just back from a wonderful week-end from the Belvedere and it was everything we hoped it would be. We were a group of 13 so used up all the rooms in the house. Nigel and his partner Jennifer cooked wonderful meals for us and was a most gracious host. It was a very relaxing place to stay and we were made to feel very welcome. We will definitely go back some time and will recommend it to all our friends. Ally

Room Tip: Our rooms were excellent, we slept very well in very comfortable beds

We stayed here for two nights flying into Beziers (20 minutes away) and from the moment we arrived we knew it was going to be a lovely break, we received a very warm welcome from our Irish host Nigel who owns and runs The Belvedere, which he has thoughtfully restored and refurbished recently and simply decorated throughout. It is obvious he takes a lot of pride in his Chambre d’Hote; there is a high attention to detail and outstanding service. It really felt like I was staying with friends.
The house lies in a quiet street near the centre of the historic Medieval village of Quarante just opposite a chapel, it has a large very sunny terrace but should you want it, a large umbrella provides a welcome shade too.
The accommodation is comfortable with delightful white bedrooms and very comfortable good sized beds with crisp good quality white bed linen and the bathrooms are extremely clean with excellent showers and lots of hot water!
Nigel would prepare a superb breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice, local breads and eggs and and is an accomplished cook so will happily prepare a beautiful dinner, in our case a BBQ with a most excellent choices of wines.
We enjoyed walking about the village with its narrow streets and arched doorways and the immediate countryside is beautiful, it is close to the Canal du Midi where we enjoyed a fantastic lunch at one of the restaurants.
All in all a truly wonderful place to stay in our case to chill and relax!

We stayed here for two nights and had a very pleasant time. The place is beautifully restaurated. The room and bathroom were big and well decorated in authentic style with modern comfort. Breakfast was good, including good coffee, fresh bread, boiled eggs and croissants. It was very quiet in the night, so we slept well. We got a key of the front door, so we could come and go as we pleased. Each night the owner put a jar with cold iced water for us in the room.

almost the first words were, "Would you like a cup of tea?" We said "Yes" and enjoyed it on Nigel's terrace. this is a very special B&B mostly created by Nigel himself. Great room and a very modern and stylish bathroom. iced water in the room and excellent breakfast with even a boiled egg if you wanted it.

An immaculately restored family house in a charming village just a few kilometres from the canal du midi. Retains lots of original features but also has an uncluttered contemporary feel- ask to see the before pictures. We had a lovely big room with very comfortable beds and gorgeous bed linen. the bathroom was a great size too and the shower had a pressure to die for. I loved the peaceful feeling after we closed the shutters at night- no traffic noise just the occasional call of an owl. Nigel our excellent host produced a perfect continental breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice and great coffee. He also gave us lots of information on the area and a lift to a nearby restaurant. He has bikes to hire and cycling would be a perfect way to explore the area. Definitely a place to come back to.

Room Tip: Ring Nigel and tell him your requirements.

A beautifully restored building, with huge well-decorated rooms, fabulous bathrooms and a wonderful owner/proprietor (Nigel). It felt more like home than a bed and breakfast (only much nicer than any home I've ever had). Quarante is one of the nicest villages I've visited in the Languedoc, and is ideally located -- 5 minutes from Capestang and the Canal Midi, a half hour from Bezier and Pezenas and about an hour from Carcassone and Montpellier. Nigel is incredibly helpful, knows the region, makes great recommendations and puts together a fabulous breakfast. Not only would I recommend this place to my friends, I plan to return myself next time I'm in the region.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Situated in a quiet road near the centre of Quarante, The Belvedere opened its doors to the public in late 2009 after 5 years of total renovation of the 18th Century building. Situated on a hill surrounded by the vineyards of Languedoc-Roussillon, the largest wine-producing region in the world and with views south to the Pyrenees and north to the ‘Montagne Noire’, Quarante is 20mins by car to Beziers, Narbonne and St Chinian. The Canal du Midi is a short walk or bicycle ride away. The region was extensively developed by the Romans and is noted for their legacy. The 'Via Domitia' being just one example. Quarante has two butchers, a baker, a chemist, a vegetable shop, a self-service mini market, a newsagent and two schools and a population of 1500. So it is a thriving picturesque typical French village. There are plenty of good restaurants within 10 minutes’ drive and we are lucky to have two excellent restaurants a short walk from the village.A regular bus route services Beziers. The Belvedere has free Wi-Fi throughout the house. ... more   less
