We popped down to Devon to meet friends and dropped into The Golden House for lunch. Our friends regularly eat here and we valued their recommendation. The restaurant, as opposed to the take-away section accessed through a separate door, was decorated in a predictably Chinese style, with an inviting atmosphere. We were the only party present through lunch, though I understand that the evening is, perhaps predictably, better attended. Our hostess went out of her way to please us, our chopsticks being replaced rapidly by the western cutlery more suited to our aging hands. We selected drinks and prawn crackers and ordered a variety of dishes from the extensive menu. The spare rib starter was excellent, followed by prawn, chicken and pork dishes, plus egg fried rice. We found that just a starter and main more than sufficed and all dishes were briskly presented, accompanied by voluminous thanks. I cannot comment on prices, as we were treated by our friends, but I can say that the quality of the food was excellent. The only minor comment would be that there was no towel in the disabled toilet, but this was swiftly remedied with profuse apologies. We look forward to our next visit.
