Don't make our mistake, we looked at the map and it was one and a half kilometres from the bus terminus to the fort, so we thought we would walk there. The map we used didn't show that most of the way is uphill! We should have realised of course, but we arrived very hot and sweaty. Then when we had looked around the fort, we had difficulty getting a taxi to take us back, because everyone else was sensible, had taken a taxi, and then their taxi was waiting to take them back. We managed to get a taxi that had just dropped passengers off, and was willing to take us back.
Perhaps the silly walk to the fort prejudiced us but we really didn't think it was worth the effort. The views over the bay are spectacular, but many of the other features of the fort are not taken advantage of. We spent 20 minutes looking around , some of that time spent recovering from our walk, and then headed back to Candolim.
There is no charge for this site, which is surprising. Perhaps if a charge was levied it would allow funds to improve the site, including repairing the very rough drive up to the fort.

Everyone who goes to North Goa visits this fort.
The fort is in good condition despite the large number of visitors arriving everyday.

The entire fort is a huge water tank.

If you go towards the taj property, you can see extension of the fort.

It's one of the most visited historic sites in Goa. That makes it much overcrowded too. It's a must see site for history buffs; For those who want themselves away from the rush, better opt for some other sights. The scenic beauty is a plus point as it is located adjacent to the sea.
