The hotel is undoubtedly in a very beautiful location and we awed at the lush mountains and views and this is what the 4* are for only, we were pleased with the garden suite. Breakfast was good, however the evening meals were hit and miss. The half board dinner was sometimes cold, for example crispy squid had clearly been cooked at the start of the evening in a batch and by the time it was served was cold. The Chinese versions were not great, but some other fish dishes were delicious and dessert mostly good. We were disappointed by the service as it felt a bit contrived and didn't feel they genuinely wanted to help, the cleaner accidentally threw out my dental retainer which I understand could have been a mistake but addressing this with the manager, they didn't seem to look for it in the rubbish and merely looked around the room. I understand that accidents happen but some small gesture like an apology or a complimentary drink would have been a small inexpensive gesture. Also they only supplied one bottle of water for your entire stay which seems stingy, again if they had supplied each day it wouldn't have cost a lot but would have been appreciated by guests as there really isn't many other options to get water at night. They also knocked on our door at night to give us a present on the eve of our departure and it was a questionnaire and a printed out slip of paper with a proverb on it... We had to leave early and so they arranged a breakfast plate for us, we expected promising things as it was always good, but it was a dried sandwich with ham and cheese, yoghurt and a banana and it as very disappointing. What is trying to be exclusive I think it could have a few extra touches to improve the service.

We were very disappointed by Lakaz Chamarel especially after the excellent 20o Sud. The room was poor, shabby and dark, the mattress had to changed too,a hut with a thatched roof so you could hear every raindrop. This was supposed to have been a superior room. There was only an outside shower not good in the dark and especially as the whole place was full of bugs and mosquitoes. The lavatory stank badly. We have come away with so many bites even though we took our own precautions.
It certainly was not luxurious and you will get badly bitten which is very miserable. The general manager made us feel rather unwelcome and awkward asking simple questions when no information on the place or the area was provided. We did walk 15km round trip from the hotel to the coloured rock with its giant turtles imported from the Seychelles. The shuttle to the beach was a great relief to spend time away from the insects on the most beautiful beach swimming surrounded by tropical fish. It does not operate on Sundays.
The food was good although small portions and the serving staff were irritatingly very pushy with water, which you would have to pay for, and drinks and always in a hurry to serve the meal. Take your own water and wine for the room. This is not a relaxing place.

Stayed here for 3 nights unfortunately the weather was rain every day due to a anti cyclone it was still amazing so beautiful and serene . Staff where fantastic a big thank you to Geraldine one of the managers who sorted out a couple of problems immediately so pleasant and professional.
We stayed on half board the breakfast very good in fact my better half said it was the best breakfast ever which is very good as he is a breakfast connoisseur, evening meal again was great so tasty and fresh thoroughly enjoyed every meal first class. A special mention to Ashwin who greeted us ever meal time with the biggest smile in Mauritius service very good.
Such a pity the weather wasn't on our side would have been wonderful to see beautiful Lakaz in the sunshine. Thank you to all the fabulous staff, chefs and management had a great stay.

Lovely staff, great food and peace and quiet. My wife and I stayed for 4 nights at the beginning of May and enjoyed it enormously. Surrounded by the jungle it is worth remembering to pack every kind of insect repellant going. Any discomfort from the many bites is more than made up for by the beauty of the setting though. Breakfasts were always a treat, plenty of fresh fruit and the evening set menu was always worth looking forward to.

A couple of things we thought might add to the experience - a map of the local area and maybe also one of the hotel grounds. After all there is a spectacular view point in the grounds where you can watch the sun go down but there is little information to tell you how to get to it, or even that it is there. There is a large map pinned to a board by the office but it isn't very useful. My wife and I walked to the local run distillery and so a map showing this and other walking routes around would have been good. I think the 'green' credentials of the hotel could have been emphasised more - information notes in the rooms about the hotel itself, a little bit of its history.

I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to anyone who wanted to get away from it all and wanted to enjoy some simple pleasures while surrounded by nature.

Room Tip: Pay more and get your own pool if swimming is what you are here for

We had a wonderful stay at Lakaz Chamerel. We were lucky to be greeted on our first night by the frogs' chorus. The entire local frog population sang in full voice for several hours - a really evocative sound to welcome us to a forest retreat. In the morning we had coffee on the veranda watching the weaver birds preparing impressive hanging nests as a laour of love.
Our room was well furnished and kept spotlessly clean. The open-air (but perfectly private) shower was a little unusual but just added to the charm of the place.
The two major points for us were the great food served in the style of a first class restaurant and the warm, friendly staff team who all, regardless of role, worked tirelessly to make us welcome and our stay comfortable.

Room Tip: The hotel is fully situated within the forest. All of the rooms have great views.
