We stayed at Nicole and Fredi's B&B on the evening of our arrival. It is about 30-40 minutes drive from the airport.
There are couple bungalows on their property so you have the place to yourselves rather than a room in somebody's house. Our bungalow had 2 queen beds and small bathroom. There is a hammock out front which is very relaxing. They provide towels and sheets but no soap or shampoo so bring your own soap and shampoo. Luckily we had a hand sanitizer that we could use. All other B&B we stayed at provided the soap and shampoo.
There are many birds on the property and you wake to the lovely songs of the birds. The breakfast is absolutely delicious - ask for special scrambled eggs :) There is also fresh squeezed juice from their own oranges, different types of meat that they cure themselves, delicious bread and tea / coffee. We had a lovely informative chat with them when eating breakfast. It was like staying with friends :)
Last but not least, they helped us arrange car rental when our confirmed car rental with Europcar was overbooked and could not give us a car. Nicole called up "Target car rental" which is a small Costa Rican car rental company and they were very helpful in getting us a car at the last minute with very reasonable prices compared to quotes we were getting from other agencies.
Highly recommend this B&B !!

Nicole and Fredi were excellent hosts. They accommodated my last-minute reservations and were very helpful with giving me rides in their car and making sure I had everything that I needed. The cabins themselves were clean, cozy, and well-equipped, and I had a relaxing day in the hammock and by the pool before flying out of the nearby San Jose airport (only a 30 minute drive). I would highly recommend staying in this peaceful and beautiful part of the country over the busy cities of San Jose or Alajuela at the beginning or end of your trip to Costa Rica!

What a beautiful place. The surrounding gardens were tranquil, the view was magnificent and we saw more birds there than anywhere else we went while in Costa Rica.

Fredi and Nicole were fabulous hosts. They were helpful and hospitable. The poolside breakfast was outstanding. Our cottage was very comfortable and well equipped. It was always nice to return there in the evening after a long day of sightseeing.

We will stay there again if we are in the area and will definitely recommend it to friends who might visit Costa Rica.

We spent our first night in Costa Rica at this beautifully located B&B in Atenas, a 30-minute drive from San Jose airport. Run by a Swiss couple who go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay, this accomodation consists of 3 cozy and spacious cabins overlooking their beautiful garden and Costa Rica's Central Valley. Optionally, they serve a hearty breakfast: very well worth it! A short trail from their B&B leads down to the Rio Grande river. Make sure to take a walk early in the morning when the sun sets and the hazy clouds vanish in the valley: breathtaking! Owner Freddie even gave us a tour through their garden. It's a shame we were only there for 1 night as I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a piece of Costa Rica's green paradise!

We have been fortunate to stay here twice........first time with mutual Swiss friends who took us there in March 2008 and we returned again in March 2010, sadly without or friends from Basel who had to cancel at the last moment.
Nocole & Fredi are perfect hosts who go that extra mile to ensure you have a relaxing and interesting time.
They serve the best breakfast in Costa Rica with fresh fruit , eggs and produce mainly from their own garden, or bought fresh early each morning from the local market in Atenas which is only a 5 minute drive away.
You can sit on the terrace early morning enjoying the warmth and having this fabulous breakfast whilst toucans and howler monkeys occassionally break the peace and tranquility.
The cabins have everything you need for a self catering stop, but we dined most evenings with Nicole & Fredi, one evening we cooked for them buying huge fresh prawns from a nearby fishing cooperative down at the coast which is now about 45 minutes drive after a new road was recently opened.
They can arrange any trips or vehicle hire, take you on trips escorted, or they will advise you on best times and places to see and leave you to do your own thing. No pressure to make any decisions, just ask and they will help.......even down to getting some shoes repaired or getting a haircut. Life is easy and laid back there.
It is a great base to leave stuff and venture out for a few days trip up to the Carribbean or down to the Pacific.
We went up to Limon & Cahuita , across to the Nicoya Peninsular to Montezuma, day trips to Poas Volcano or overnight Arenal Volcano.......so much to see and do, and never enough time to do it, so you have to go back again. No problem with that. We will go back again to see Nicole & Fredi and their two beautiful German Shepherd bogs Gino & Tosca who are all a big part of a happy family. Fredi has good music and makes good air dried meats and has just built a new chicken shed.......I have offered to stay in that if their cabins are booked.
A lovely peaceful, welcoming and charming place and their prices are so reasonable. You cant beat it.
