This has got to be one of our favourite holiday stays ever!
Booking online was very easy, Francesca speaks excellent English and paying online by paypal was simple.
We had good directions to the castle from Florence airport and we arrived at about 8pm. Francesca met us and showed us around. We also met her mama and papa who live just a short distance away. We had such a warm welcome from the family that we just knew we were in for a good week! We had a welcome basket left for us in the kitchen which comprised of bread, cheese, salami, pasta, homemade tomato sauce and preserves, even a bottle of wine!! An information pack was a great idea with everything we needed to know about the surrounding area. Mobile phone reception was patchy at the castle but we could get internet connection with the handy little gadget that was provided. We were also provided with a local mobile phone that could be used to contact the owners if needed although we have a great little phone contract that gives us free calls, texts and internet whilst in Italy so we didn't use this.
What can I say about the castle.............WOW! The apartment takes up part of the ground floor and comprises of kitchen, sitting room, bedroom and bathroom with everything you could need for your stay. The furniture is comfy and the castle decorated beautifully throughout, the painted ceilings were amazing. The outside space is awesome with fantastic views across the valley. It was 39 degrees whilst we were in Italy and the private pool area was a welcome cool down.
The castle is in a lovely quiet area and is well placed for trips to Pisa and Florence along with Sienna and San gimignano. We hired a car for our holiday but we took the train to Florence as the city is too busy for driving. The train station is in the nearby town of Pontassieve. We also drove to Lake Trasimeno and took a boat over to Maggiore island as well as visit the Chianti wine region. Lots of things to do in the area, you will be spoilt for choice.
The nearest grocery store is also in Pontassieve. The coop has everything you will want if you are staying at the castle rather than going out to local restaurants.
We really felt like King and Queen of our own castle for the week and I can fully recommend a stay here.
Thank you for letting us stay at your lovely castle and for making us feel so welcome. Good luck in renovating the rest of the castle, I'm sure we will return one day...........
