“Lovely restaurant, amazing food, rooms only ok.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2011

We stayed in this hotel a week ago, for one week.. We had stayed there in past years also. The room over looked the river, it was lovely to wake to the sound of the water in the morning.. It had a little balcony which was nice. The room was quite basic, I was going to move but the other rooms on offer were similar, bigger but without the river view. .
I think the room would have been more comfortable if the wooden floor had perhaps a nice comfortable rug to put your feet on when stepping out of the bed.
The bathroom was disappointing ,as while it had a bath it did not have a real shower, just a removable shower head. Towels were very small and poor quality but you get used to all that.

However that aside, the hotel is very cute, it has a lovely little pool and dinner is taken outside by the river, at night, weather permitting. The town is very quite but it depends on what sort of a holiday you are looking for. We like the peace and would rather there than in busy Biarritz.
My only little disappointment with the hotel was that while the staff who served in the hotel were very nice and very efficient, the owners were rather unfriendly. We passed the chef himself ( who by the way produces amazing food, beautifully presented and very good quality )several times a day yet he barely acknowledges or speaks to you. i think that's a pity. I would not want to get into conversation but a greeting and a smile would not go astray and I think it makes guests feel good.

All in all though I would return especially for the meals.

Set by a trout stream in a mountain valley with a village nearby, it has given us several happy and very restful stays over recent years. The food is truly excellent. We have used the demi-pension option because we have not found a menu item that we did not find delicious, and have discovered things to like that we would have not usually chosen from a wider menu. The presentation and setting of the meals, under the plane trees on the stream bank, takes some beating. When orderingt trout, part of the ritual is to watch a chef walk along the bank to a keep-pool next to a small weir and return with wriggling fish in a net. Ten minutes later they are on the plates and demonstrate the shortcomings of frozen fish.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony facing the river.

A lovely location in the village of St Etienne de Baigorry. The room was spacious, well furnished and serviced to a high standard daily, with a terrace overlooking the stream. We stayed demi pension and the breakfasts and dinner were of excellent standard. The hotel is very well run in a traditional french/basque style.

Most enjoyable stay and we will certainly return.

Room Tip: Stay demi pension and trust whatever is on the menu - it was all good

We stayed here for 4 nights in early Augsut 2011. The hotel is delightful - quiet, charming with very attentive staff.

Our room was spacious, simple and opened out to a small balcony overlooking the river Nive. The hotel itself is positioned next to a river with a large terrace for dining, a swimming pool, tennis court and a number of places to sit and relax next to the river.

We stayed half-board. The food was plentiful with varied menus based mainly on local produce every night.

Mme and Monsier Arce have put a lot of effort into this hotel and it shows - they were the perfect hosts. It is a great pity that this type of family-run establishment seems not to exist anymore in the UK.

We stayed for 4 nights and had a marvelous overall experience. Our room on the "premier etage" overlooked the river and the view and sound of rushing water were a delight. We had opted for the demi-pension approach and the fixed dinner menu was uniformly excellent and the service very attentive--though a house salad option in lieu of the cheese course would have been welcome. We did not eat lunch at the hotel, so cannot speak to the menu or service for that meal. Regarding breakfast, the offerings were quite extensive--as a previous reviewer commented--and if supplies of something were running out the staff were generally attuned to that situation. The facilities were very clean and well-maintained. The location is outstanding, and not just for the river frontage and views of surrounding hills. Beach towns, the Basque museum in Bayonne, the ancient pilgrim town of St. Jean Pied-de-Port, and passes into Spain--all are within an hour or so of the hotel. There is even one of the long-distance footpaths (Grande Randonnee 10) that bisects St.-Etienne-de-Baigorry if a day hike is desired. This was our first visit to the hotel and to Basque country, and a return is now on our list.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view of the river are a little more expensive than garden-view rooms, but worth it.

Super spot by the river with a small number for lunch. We were kept waiting for ages to even order a drink with several waiting staff being expert at avoiding us. Eventually we had to go and find Madame in the office and our order was taken with somewhat of a grump. The food was lovely and the location made up for the French frost.

Return visit 2 years on :- same excellent all-round experience, same staff, same superb value; if anything the cuisine is even better. The last reviewer's grumbles about the breakfast ? - 4 staff members, including Mme Arcé work hard throughout breakfast to keep the supplies coming and nothing runs out; What is on offer ? Delicious croissants and bread, a large jug of coffee (or equivalent), fresh orange juice, 4 home made jams, honey, cold frittata, eggs, the most delicious local sheep's yoghurt plus 2 other commercial varieties, seasonal fruit, jambon sec, cheese, crème caramel, two types of home made cake. How is that not ample nor good value for 12 euros ? The dinner menu is specials, a 30 and a 45 euro menu, plus add-on aperitifs; wine list very strong on local Irouleguay and Spanish Basque labels. The food is divine and has a very appreciative regional reputation, so don't think you can swan down of an evening and expect a table - book in advance. Thank Heavens it's still just a 3 star hotel and there is no Michelin star (yet). Be aware that some rooms don't have a stand-up shower, so if you really want one, make sure you ask. To Mme Arcé..... "please don't change anything" , it's perfect, even your gentle leg-pulling of English guests !!!
