“Chic boutique resort at reasonable prices”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 January 2012

The bungalows are tidy, comfortable and have a separate BIG shower. The bed is very comfy and the room/s are spacious and clean. The fridge is not really cooling the drinks but a very effective way to put the coffee and tea maker ;-).
The main pool is ok, the staff very attentive but not very professional. Doen't matter, we are all here for holiday, aren't we?
The resort is located at the northern end of Lamai beach. The beach restaurant was not fully operational end of December 2011 - mai pen rai - there are almost thousands of beach shacks and restaurants around.
The beaches on Samui Island and Lamai, however, are not clean anymore (we stayed here already in the early eighties). The landscape is still nice and if you inform yourself about the location well in advance, there are plenty things to do.

Zara beach Resort was a wonderful stay from beginning to end. Whilst we only stayed one night on Jan 3 as were staying with friends other nights on Koh Samui we were totally over the moon upon checking in and being given a whopping upgrade! We had only booked the hotel that morning over wotif as our friends were delayed and we arrive far later than expected as our boat from Koh Phangan was delayed.
We were hungry and tired and the staff made us feel very welcome and very spoilt. We had a villa with its own plunge pool, lounge with huge flat screen and a balcony overlooking the beach. The breakfast was lovely sitting by the pool and the resort was well positioned near a fabulous seafood restaurant on the corner!
If we were to return to Koh Samui and needed a place to stay I would consider going back to this resort and using it to its fullest potential as we really didn’t have enough time there.

Room Tip: The villa room was wonderful!!

My Partner and I spend 3 nights at Zara in February 2011 - and we were not disappointed.
After doing my thorough scouting online for the best quality for the best price, we settled on Zara beach resort- the cheapest rate by far for a resort with private plunge pool access, and beachfront views.
When we arrived at Zara, we were welcomed with drinks and a place to sit down to check in - what a beautiful impression the check in area made.
We were then upgraded to a beachview villa (one next to the spa and right in front of the bridge across to the beach) - this was an amazing villa. While mirroring the other villas, the bamboo swing and spa next to the villa made it more beautiful and relaxing. While we had an 'obstructed' view of the beach, the location was great. I agree with some of the other reviews about the villas not being a private as they could be, we didn't let it affect our stay.
We definitely were not disappointed by the villa and it amenities either - gorgeous bed, great air conditioning, giant shower and beautiful bathroom features. A sizeable living room area with LCD tv etc. It was very spacious, and gorgeous. While we had a plunge pool, we didn't get to use it because the water was freezing - but nothing could be done about that.
With help from Pik and (I've forgotten the bartender's name), who really personalised our experience, we had a great stay. Pik even organised a lunch for us - we requested a real local thai yellow curry - which we certainly got, and at a cost of only about AU$12. The cocktails were great, its just a pity I couldnt drink more than two without falling over.
Would we go back? Absolutely! Only because we loved the smaller size of the resort, and the very personalised service and personal people.

10 reasons for staying in zara
1. We arrived early and the management great us warmly. They let us check-in early and introducing around the villa very well
2. Our private pool although is a bit small. However, they keep it very clean and maintain it very well (can you believe it, the pool man come to the villa 3 times just to make sure there aren’t any leaf drop into the pool)
3. Garden concept - Whole resort is surrounded by tropical plantation. Its like living in a beautiful tropical garden which the plants are well trim, well maintain and design perfectly. Besides, water feature that located at every villa cools the environment
4. Housekeeping is well done and very efficient – they will have 3-4 persons do it at the same time where you can have your villa clean and tidy up in just 20 mins!
5. Breakfast – you can suggest to the management whatever breakfast that you prefer a day before with the preferable serving time and they will ready for you in time
6. Their massage is superb as their spa area is located in floating huts on lotus pond with flowing water
7. Staff is friendly and helpful especially the manager who will always walk around the compound to check and ensure every guest staying is satisfied and comfortable
8. Ventilation for the villa is satisfactory as it is a combination of ceiling fan and air condition
9. There have extraordinary big basin which is convenient even for washing clothes!
10. It located at the centre of Lamai which is very convenient for shopping & sightseeing

My husband and I had 6 nights at Zara beach, we loved it. But the best thing about Zara Beach was the staff by far. The staff who would do anything to make your stay perfect, we particularly enjoyed Pik and Aek's company at the pool bar and the breakfast staff especially Min were wonderful. There was some work going on which was noisy and the owners were there and thought maybe a free cocktail might have been a nice gesture considering the excavator worked until 7pm but otherwise this place was fantastic and will definately go back. Really missing those beautiful people who work there.

Very nice resort with spacious rooms. Very friendly staff.
Very close to city centre.
But you need to walk short distance to get to the beach.
Crossing a river which can smell very badly.
If the river was gone this would be an excellent resort

Room Tip: Get a room away from the river

Just returned from an amazing two week honeymoon in Koh Samui. We stayed at Zara Beach Resort for the first 10 nights followed by 3 nights at Kirikayan Luxury Villas Resort.

Zara is a great place located just off the main strip in Lamai, close enough to all the restaurants and nightlife but not too close - Zara is tucked away at the end of a side street right next to the beach. Definitely glad we stayed here for the first part of our trip as we got to experience the real side of Koh Samui and everything was just a stone's throw away. Lamai beach is fantastic, the whole area is just sooo relaxing.

We stayed in a grand suite plunge pool villa and this was really nice, modern and spacious with beautiful greenery surrounding us. Zara really do take care of the grounds - we saw the gardeners every day keeping things in good shape and the staff will do everything and anything for you. The only drawback was the lack of privacy, you could be seen by the surrounding villas and staff that do walk around the paths between the villas quite often unless you were inside the villa itself.

Zara is still in 'soft opening' phase which they seem to have been in for the last couple of years now - I guess this is due to the storm damage they've had on several occassions and as a result there is no restaurant on site as of yet. With this in mind I would say their prices are probably a bit too high, but if and when the resort is finally completed it will be a different story.
It's just a shame about the river which runs right by the resort and IS filthy and DOES sometimes smell. And the worst part? Zara opens up the sandbank on the beach which means the river runs openly into the sea on the part of beach directly in front of the resort. This river is filthy and extremely unhygienic - it was explained to us by the staff that a couple of the larger resorts further up the river discard all their food waste etc into the river which quite simply makes it a health hazard. Now would you want to swim in the sea at the same part of beach where this river runs into it? No, you wouldn't. So although it is a beautiful area of beach in front of Zara you have to walk further along the beach for a dip in the sea. But don't get me wrong, Lamai beach is amazing and Zara Beach Resort is very nice, quiet and relaxing, with fantastic staff.

Would I come back to Zara? Probably not. Only because we've experienced it now and there are lots and lots of other resorts out there in Koh Samui which are just as plush but don't have the river running through it. Although as i said before I'm glad we did stay there for the true experience of Lamai and with exception of the river (which wasn't such a big deal - we certainly still had an amazing time) we wouldn't have changed anything.

After Zara we then stayed at the more secluded 5 star Kirikayan resort to the north of the island and were upgraded to a honeymoon pool villa. All I can say is.. wow!!
