Sunrise Bungalow
Ranked #42 of 51 Hotels in Lamai Beach
Reviewed 23 October 2015

Returned to Sunrise after 10 years,to bring back memories and just to avoid the crowded places you find elsewhere on Koh Samui.
The owner which I know for a long time, stick to the concept of simplicity, authenticity and hospitality.
She can and will arrange everything for you, needed.
Most guests come back on a regular basis, and they find something here in atmoshfere and friendlyness you dont find anywhere else.
The location is perfect at the far southend of Lamai 500 m away from Hin Tai Hin Yai rocks.the sea near Sunrise is a good swimming and snorkling location

Room Tip: There is 1 big nice room with seaview.we stayed in this room.

I have been to Sunrise many times over the years. It is still owned by Phum, a very kind-hearted Thai lady who I always call in to say hello to whenever I am in Samui.

Over the years she and her family gradually upgraded the place from some small tent like huts made of palm leaves which only had the sand as a floor back in the 1980's, to wooden bungalows on stilts in the 90's and now to a variety of more substantial but still very beautiful buildings, some of wood and some of concrete, but all in a traditional Thai style.
The small bungalows towards the sea are currently 500 baht per night and occupied most of the time as they are very popular. These are basic but have an attached bathroom , fan and cute little balcony, set in a delightfully well maintained tropical garden.
The other bungalows are much bigger and equipped with more modern facilities such as airconditioning and TV. There is a very pleasant wooden restaurant facing the sea which serves a good choice of wonderful Thai food and drinks at a reasonable price. There is adequate room for parking of a few motorbikes if you want to hire one.
The bungalows are approached either via the beach if you are on foot or via the access road leading to Hinta Hinyai. Sunrise entrance is on the left down quite a steep little hill with all the accommodation in the forested, jungle -like garden. The reception is in the restaurant on the right hand side.

The beach at this end of Lamai has some interesting large rocks, the main one from afar resembles the head of an elephant with it's trunk stretching out to sea. Just infront of Sunrise there are other smaller rocks forming a secluded bathing place with shallow water which is also nice for snorkelling.
Just around the corner from the giant elephant shaped rock are the famous rock formations called Hinta Hinyai ( Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks). These are very amusing for photographs as they resemble male and female genitalia, and some quite rude looking postcards are on sale from the stalls near them.

If staying at Sunrise the nearest convenient shops are on the main Road just a few minutes walk away and include Family Mart and a 7-Eleven as well as places for motorbike hire and restaurants.
Going up the busy main road at the top of the hill on the left as you go towards the main town of Lamai there is a large post office and just after this at the top of the hill you take the road to the right, going downhill to get to the main street and the beach.
You pass a Thai boxing gymn and a kilometer of bars and restaurants, money exchange places and a few resorts and guest houses. There is a German Street called Lindenstrasse on the left followed by Lamai Food Centre which has a nightmarket infront selling tourist stuff. If you continue on the main road you also get to a MacDonalds followed by an outdoor food stall market and some small noisy pole dancing bars on the left. If you continue another kilometer you get to Walking Street, which is over the other side of a small river and then on the left is an interesting local market that sells seafood, fruit, and vegetables. There is also a large Tesco- Lotus supermarket near here for anything else you need.

Room Tip: It's your own choice, but I like the small huts because they are nearest the beach.

We stayed for four nights and had a beautiful time on the island and in this peaceful, well kept and perfectly located resort. The bungalows are close to the beach (really liked this part of Lamai beach better than the full and dirty Chaweng beach) and everybody was very friendly. Situated at the very end/ beginning of Lamai, the beach never gets to crowded. Good value for the money and a nice atmosphere. Try the Italian restaurant further up the road (Osteria!).

When I booked the holiday I wanted to be on the beach, or as close too as possible, I could of paid four or five times the price to be in a flash 5 star hotel just up the beach front, but I wanted traditional. I stayed for 15 nights here, and was made to feel perfectly at home by the owner 'Pom' and all her fantastic friendly staff. Yes, it is a traditional Bungalow resort and a little old, but it is immaculatley kept and run to perfection. I also ate here for breakfast, snacks and evening meals and all were excellent!!! so if you want chilled back, relaxed, traditional Thai..then Sunrise on Lamai Beach is gorgeous, and the place to be.

Unfortunately, realized too late that $600 was missing from my money belt. I left it at the room b/c I didn't want to take it to the beach with me. Thinking back on it, it was stupid of me to carry so much cash on me, but at the time, the alternative seemed riskier.
Other thoughts: Location is great, quiet and peaceful part of the beach, but the bungalows are overpriced, musty, and small.
We were later told by other fellow travelers that there are other places down the beach that were less expensive and great!

I recently stayed at Sunrise Bungalows with 4 of my friends. We rented the basic bungalows and it is very basic. The room has a double bed and private bathroom. My room was not even 100m from the sea and you could hear the waves early in the morning. The owner went out of her way to make our stay comfortable. We ate most meals at the restaurant and the food was delicious! We rented scooters and a Jeep and again she helped us. She even helped us to organize flights back to Bangkok. There are more expensive and luxurious bangalows. The bungalows are set in a beautiful garden and the view early morning was stunning.
