I recently stayed here (04-07/03/17) and rather enjoyed it. I travelled for botanical interests and was not disappointed! The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is good. The grounds could do with a bit of a revamp and the tv's could receive bbc1 but don't let these minor details discourage you from staying here! There are plenty of hikes around the area and the flora is amazing! Will defently stay again.

I have been there only 3 nights, but already know that if i ever come back will book my room there. Very nice, clean hotel. What i like the most was the big room (we have double standard room) and that the hotel wasnt look like a tipical square hotel, have a lot of character. Highly recommended. Only little one thing...personal during breakfast not very friendly.

Lovely hillside location with great views. Staff are great and very helpful. Some interesting hairpins and dizzy heights especially the road to Tazacorte. Very few beaches accessible on La Palma. If you want a chill out holiday this is a good choice.

Room Tip: Enjoyed by walkers of which there were many

We were well aware that the hotel was in a rather remote northern area of La Palma, however I perhaps overestimated Barlovento. It certainly is not a tourist location or particularly pretty or well equipped. It has a permanently closed (from what i could tell) tourist office, two reasonable sized shops to stock up, a garage and a handful of bars and thats about it. The hotel is on the outskirts and they have build a convenient if slightly scary path to cut out walking on the winding road, I say scary because its not lit at night so requires a torch and is best not walked alone. Not for any fear of being attacked as i'm sure its very safe, just a bit creepy and if you were to fall off into a ravine at least there would be someone to get help!

If you like to eat in the hotel every night then this place will suit you well, the restaurant was fine, bit formal for my taste and they had a set menu with no choices if you are looking for a cheaper option. We tried this one night and had soup, beef goulash and banana cake with ice cream. I work in a care home and found this experience a bit of a bus mans holiday, soft easy chew etc.

We thought we'd try the delights of barlovento the next night, we ate in the most promising looking of the 5 of so bars, its generally not a good idea to eat anything sold as meat in red sauce and hence we didn't go back again. So there we were with 3 more nights of our holiday and little in the way of food options, sadly the one ok looking local restaurant at the end of the footpath was closed so back we went to the hotel. This time we struck gold by avoiding the set menu in favour of a paella which i'd definitely recommend but is only for two of more and chocolate fondants if you have any space for it. seeing as this seems to be mainly a food review I suppose I should mention breakfast, its a good selection aimed at the mainly english and german guest contingent plenty of choices.

And now for all things not food; well the room was large and clean and there was a nice little balcony, big bath (I'm not fussed about what colour it was), plentiful hot water, comfy beds (two singles pushed together) and good bedding. The bar area was welcoming and relaxing, mainly full of people reading books or trying to check their emails. The pool(s) were both small, the outdoor one not in use as too cold and the indoor one also very chilly despite being apparently heated to 26! it was also surprisingly deep and wouldn't have been suitable for non swimmers / kids. The Jacuzzi was very popular if small as it only took four people, we had a quick dip in it, certainly warming after to pool. There was also a sauna that needed to be booked and we didn't try it.

One of the highlights was the observatory roof area, armed with a drink form the bar on a cloud free night the stars were amazing. The room balcony also had a pretty good night view although partly obscured by a large palm tree, we found that there was an additional free wifi that we could pick up from our balcony, this was a definite plus as otherwise you had to go to the reception bar area. we were in room 22 if you want to try this too.

On reflection and given the quiet nature of the hotel and the long winding drives to get around the island I think i'd recommend 2 nights here then move on to another place for variety. however thats just me, there were many older guests who seemed very content for a weeks holiday, many appeared to be repeat guests so it just depends what you want from your stay.

Last but not least the staff were nothing but friendly and polite and appreciated our attempts to speak in Spanish.

Room Tip: rooms on top floor have unobstructed sky views for stargazing

We went in November, the temperature could have been warmer and mist descended on you which was nuisance. The locals were friendly and bus drivers helpful, it is better to catch a bus to the start of a walk and then you do not have to wait, though there are a number of circular walks.
Note this is hard walking / hiking and not for the faint harted or people with vertigo
