we stayed here in may 2018 fantastic place big and clean very frendly area .
its off the beaten track a bit but there are buses to rethymno and taxis most espensive we paid was 25 euros from there at 2am so not bad .
the restaurants in prines are so much cheaper literally half compared to one restaurant and verantes is all home cooked mamma cooking greek style lots of freebies .
The villa is loverly to stay in we used the greek barbie many times . even has pots of fresh herbs growing around out side ,we used the mint mostly for our mojitos.
the owner is very helpfull if needed and dosnt bother you at all, beading was all changed after 4 days loads of towels etc
Set back from any busy commercialised area this gorgeous villa really lived up to the spec. Great for families, own pool and great bbq area. We invited family over and entertained. Local supermarket and a couple of tavernas, but car is needed to explore the island. Guest book would of been good with local places visited.wine and greek oil on arrival.toaster not working but there is a grill in oven. But highly recommend.
We had a fantastic 2 weeks at Villa Sofia, partly due to Wall to Wall sunshine and temperatures consistently around 30-35C, but mainly because of the great facilities at the villa and in Prines. The relationship with the owner was very friendly but not intrusive and we took advantage of the additional services including a wonderful local meal cooked by a neighbour and a short voyage in yacht Ariadne out of Rethymno port.
The layout of the villa suited our holiday lifestyle and the plunge pool was a huge benefit when returning from a day out in the heat. Two terraces enabled us to find sun or shade at all times of day and the interior remained cool despite the absence of air conditioning and the heat. Good wifi enabled us to keep in touch with friends and family who weren't enjoying the same weather as us ! Appropriate use of the anti-mosquito sprays and plug ins reduced bites significantly. As other reviewers have indicated, the villa is very well equipped with everyday essentials and all manner of kitchen utensils.
A car is essential and strong nerves are needed to negotiate the local roads and drivers. Gravel routes to some of the best beaches make an older, less pristine, vehicle a benefit ! Whilst parking is random a few meters walk from the villa, along pedestrian (watch out for the scooters) alleys passing occupied and vacant houses, we never had problems finding a space and neighbours were always keen to assist.
Having 3 good, but different, tavernas in the village a few minutes walk from the villa, together with a well stocked, "open all hours" store gave us all the opportunity to indulge in local wines and raki.
Thank you Manolis
f you are searching for authentic Crete, this Villa is perfect in every way. The location is just perfect - a little shop at the bottom of the drive, a great Taverna across the road and an award winning one only ten steps further up. The beautiful town of Rethimou is only a 5-10min drive with it's incredible eateries, shops and beach (I personally would suggest a car, the roads are not busy and there is plenty to explore). The Villa is peaceful, with a great terrace - we preferred sitting up there to downstairs, it is cool and has really good utilities with every type of kitchen appliance, to a laundry room and hairdryer - we even had Yorkshire Tea in the cupboard! We loved the little snug when we came home at night to relax for an hour, the only element we were less keen on was the pool, as it was very, very cold due to being in the shade however, it would not stop us heading back and we would highly recommend Villa Sophia. It's a restored building, with other non restored buildings around it dating back to the 1800's, which give it a real feel of escape and authenticity. All the locals were so friendly and welcoming, Manolis was a wonderful host who really took care of us - even leaving freshly picked fruit from his families farm. For value, experience and a real taste of Crete I would definitely recommend this villa, and we may well make it our new annual get away.
If you find this villa you have found a gem! If is very private, quiet, expertly designed renovated old building that steals your heart with a modern interior that has everything you could need and more! The photographs on the walls walk you through the build. Prines itself is a charming welcoming village with 2 shops and 2 tavernas each with their own specialities. The Olive was our most frequented! Manolis is very helpful with any questions you have and better, a really nice guy too!
Just back from staying in this lovely villa. We had a relaxing time staying in the village of Prines, lovely people plus a nice local taverna serving great traditional food. The villa itself has been beautifully restored by the owner and was a real pleasure to stay there. It has a small pool but perfect for cooling down in the midday heat. It has a lovely enclosed BBQ area which was great to use in the evening whilst enjoying a few glasses of wine.
I would advise renting a car if staying in Prines. It's a great central base to explore the island, I did many day trips to the south of the island from Prines and it was very manageable.
All in all I would recommend the villa to families, groups of friends and even couples looking for a romantic getaway, I'm sure all would have an enjoyable time staying there.
