The brainchild of an architect Kapisliana village hotel takes an old cretan village and remakes it into a boutique hotel
of understated elegance. Lovely rooms and rustic resturant serving lunch and dinner. Honesty bar by the pool.
Closest township in Rethymon - need a car for this hotel.

Booked 7 nights. Stayed in Perseus which looked a more refined and lighter room on the website than was the case. Granted it is a conversion of an original dwelling and so the darkness is understandable, to keep out the heat and sunshine, but we would have been better off in a room with a terrace to sit outside and enjoy the sunsets, rather than the small table and chairs outside our door in a thoroughfare. Small bottled water is charged at 1euro which granted the prevailing heat is unfortunate.

The service is exemplary throughout and all the staff are friendly and helpful. The owner (we think it was the owner) is in evidence each day, but certainly makes no effort to enquire as to his guests' needs.

The restoration of this hamlet has been carried out with great style and sympathy. The new section blends in quietly with the old. The pool and its setting are stunning. The planting is wonderful.

The restaurant area is delightful and breakfasts are exceptional. The dinner menu is limited and repetitive even with 2 specials added each day. The wine list is extensive. One niggle is that bread costs 1.5 euros each which we thought might have been included.

This establishment may well feel that it has achieved what it set out to do, ie provide a quiet luxurious haven and retreat in the midst of unspoilt countryside, and where the noise and bustle of everyday life are excluded. And were the weather less hot so as to permit some hill walking, then perhaps the rather stultifying atmosphere might have been mitigated somewhat. But as it was, we felt the need to get away after a few days, something which isn't that easy in the late evenings when returning one has to navigate steep narrow windy roads in total darkness. Taxis to Rethymnon cost 25 euros each way, and the town itself was a bit of a disappointment in truth, and walking to the nearest village is not a practical proposition after sunset.

So on balance, and with a certain regret, we wouldn't choose to return, which is no reflection on the staff who are really the stars of the show.

Room tip: Choose a room with a terrace. You must have a car.

Without doubt this is a delightful boutique resort in the hills of Crete. The treck from the airport is almost worth it though the nearest town (Rethymnon) is disappointing, it has to be said.
Having waited more than a year to get convenient dates at Kapsaliana, we had high expectations. Descriptions and pics on the website are full of promise for a unique and attentive experience at a 5* equivalent venue.

Living up to our expectation was perhaps always going to be hard. But given the cost (current exchange rate not helping), for a superior junior suite, and seeing the lovely photos on the website, first sight of the room was a little disappointing.
The rooms have a rustic style of course, but are perhaps not as plush as one might expect. There was a stale odour in the en-suite and the decor looked a little tired in places, though not at all bad.

Nothing was lacking, but nor did it feel luxurious, if you know what I mean? The resort itself is very lovely, quiet, pretty and well-maintained, with a quirky layout and real sense of quaint and historic.

On arrival the reception staff were welcoming and accommodating, with dinner made available despite arriving at 10pm. Waiting staff were friendly and attentive and the dining terrace was really lovely with trees and lighting to enhance the ambience.

The pool is a good size with plenty of sunbeds and several tiers of secluded terrace if you want to distance yourself from the poolside, where there were a few more (well behaved) kids than we had expected.

So why an Average rating? No option for 'Good' and we didnt think it deserved 'Very Good' for the following reasons, related to our expectations..

The room (Casseiopia) was not as spacious as we have expected for a superior junior suite at £200+ per night.

Service in the restaurant was always slow. Some of the staff, though always very pleasant, seemed like they were a touch short on training for a high end restaurant. It felt like they were always one person short staffed, putting pressure on the working staff. Lunch was worst, with food orders also being serviced down at the pool. The time for food to arrive could be as long as 40 minutes even for a Cretan salad!

The menu was ok but not great. Disappointing not to see more fresh options, particularly at lunch where the menu is the same every day, with no specials.

The bill (including a massage and a private yoga class) was a bit of a shock. it adds up when eating lunch and dinner a number of times over the week - but there are not many options nearby to pop out for a change. When paying such a big bill, we did feel that might have included free water in the room or by the pool, but no, this is all chargeable, so pick up (very cheap) bottled water from town when there!

Finally it was nice to see the owner in residence during our stay, though he didn't speak to us (more than bon appertit), I don't think he speaks English! Acting though as a guest, it seemed that he and his family/friends put an extra pressure on the staff resources and that they perhaps experienced better service than we did!!

All in all a good holiday in a lovely resort, but given the travel distance, value for money and overall experience - not sure we will be going back, sorry to say.

We spent 2 weeks with my wife at Kapsaliana. We couldn't have been more pleased!

The location is perfect, within countryside but 20 min with a car from the sea or nearby city Rethymno. The village/hotel is just beautiful & authentic. It has great charm, is quiet and is overall the perfect example of simple luxury. Our room was luminous with a terrace and a fantastic view over the coast & landscape. Each room is different and all looked charming & pleasant. The pool, gardens & other shared places were very beautiful and pleasant as well.

As to the restaurant, it was in our opinion amazing. Authentic food, delicious olive oil, best in class fresh vegetables, all this at a decent price. The service from Stellios and his team were flawless, and we had a hard time decide to have once dinner in another place... :-)

Overall, we'd recommend this fantastic hotel to anyone wanting to relax and enjoy Crete in a beautiful & authentic village and location. We'll happily come back!
