“Wish I could live there!”
Reviewed 19 June 2010

We had the most wonderful time at Heliotopos, due largely to Debby and Patrick (An American couple who look after the guests and properties) and their warm welcome. We felt at home instantly and nothing was too much trouble for them.

The properties are found down a narrow, winding lane, surrounded almost entirely by countryside. As you enter the farm gate there is a tiny white house which is the office and laundry, follow the driveway and you pass a house which belongs to the owners who stay there when they visit from Mytilene, and then you come to the accomodation itself. There are 2 buildings, not huge and with gardens in between and all around. The properties are on about 4 acres of land. We had a 2 bedroom apt which sleeps up to 5 and was on whole top floor of one of the buildings. It consisted of a tiny hallway with bathroom to the left, largish kitchen to the right, the double bedroom straight ahead and the twin bedded room with extra bed, off the kitchen.

Both bedrooms had double doors to a terrace which was the whole length of the apartment. All windows had insect screens and the bedrooms additionally had roller shutters. There were wardrobes in both rooms with plenty of hangers, 4 drawers in the main bedroom and bedside cabinets with drawers in both rooms. In May it got a bit chilly at night but there were plenty of blankets in the wardrobes.

The bathroom was a reasonable size with a bathroom cabinet over the basin so space to store things. The shower was a tray with a curtain and always masses of very hot water.

The kichen had a table and 4 chairs, the air conditioning unit, kettle, fridge and the usual basic 2 ring cooking facility but as I don't go on holiday to cook, that never bothers me. Crockery, cutlery and (I think!) saucepans. Tea towels and washing up liquid were supplied.

From the terrace we could glimpse the sea and mountains, and from the kitchen window we had views of the mountains.

It takes about 15 minutes to stroll to Skala Eressos and on the way you cross a bridge with a river/stream below which is full of terrapins and other wildlife (saw a moorhen?? with her baby - awww!) The apartment has plenty of bikes for the guests to use but I cycled to the village one morning and it was really uncomfortable because of the cobbled road!

Anyone can use the facilities at the nearby Aeolian Village Hotel so if you're desperate for a pool it's a short stroll away.

Friday night at Heliotopos is BBQ night and that was fantastic. Guests and villagers are invited and the atmosphere is wonderful. Patrick barbeques, Debby makes salads, some of the villagers made food contributions and we took beer and wine. We met lots of people who we then saw regularly on our forays into the village and it felt like bumping into old friends.

This was our 3rd visit to Lesvos having stayed in Petra twice before. We had visited Skala Eressos on one of our previous stays in Lesvos and had found it very quiet and isolated but having now stayed there it would be my Lesvos destination of choice. A car is definitely an advantage and that is how we got there from the airport, 100 kms away and a 2 hour drive through magnificent scenery.

Skala Eressos itself has a beautiful long beach and the bars and restaurants on the beach front are actually built out over the beach. There are lots of places to eat and have a drink. There are only 3 small supermarkets and a green grocer in the village and I can't imagine that self-catering would be particularly economical as everything is very expensive.

I can't wait to get back to Heliotopos some day. However I have made it sound, you must remember, it is in Greece and is therefore basic. If you are a seasoned traveller to Greece you won't be disappointed but if you've never been to Greece, don't expect luxury.
