This country retreat is in a national park -a beautiful spot to recover from the crowds of Assisi. (It is a good 20 minute drive up narrow, winding roads.) The buildings are lovingly restored. The chill of the fall day was erased by the warmth of the fires in the fireplaces which added to the charm. The beds are stiff and the pillows flat and the combination did not provide a restorative sleep.

This hotel is part of the Romantik chain of hotels. The location is very peaceful, sitting high on the hill. The breakfasts are wonderful with plenty of pastries, yogurt, eggs, ham bacon, etc. Dinners were also quite nice if you do not want to venture into Assissi. The road getting to Le Silve is narrow and sometimes difficult. However once you arrive, you are able to relax and enjoy!

Room tip: The place is very rustic, having used original beams from when the structure was first built many many years ago!

The location is amazing and our superior room, though dark, was very comfortable. The food was good and the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The outside areas could have done with a bit of attention, the pool at the hotel was not inviting and the tennis courts etc seemed to be out of use.

The one major problem we had was with the trails mentioned on the website and also marked out on the map we received at check in. These were described as 'easily accessible'. We took the one marked E and, while we are both faily seasoned walkers, found that this was an extremely difficult trek only suitable for fit experienced hill walkers. The area inside the hotel grounds is fine but once it passes through the fence and into the dense wooded area it is a different matter and some stretches could be described as dangerous, slippy underfoot and very steep. It can be quite difficult to follow the route as the path sometimes dissapears and you have to search for the yellow markers. Don't even think about following this path with children, or without proper hiking boots, stick etc, and do tell someone where you are going and when you will be back........there is no mobile phone signal for long stretches. The walk listed as taking 2.5 hours took us 4 and we returned to the hotel with relief and many scrapes and bruises.

My wife and I stayed here with our two kids for 9 nights. The hotel is wonderful, and depending on what you are looking for in a vacation, you’ll either be pleased or not. We were a little bit of both.

What is great?

The hospitality of the people in this hotel, and all over Umbria, is amazing. If you ever felt the need to feel welcome somewhere, you need to visit Umbria.

The location is wonderful if you are looking for a very quiet and relaxed vacation away from everything. Because you are. It takes about 20 minutes for a good driver to negotiate the hillside roads leading into the hills behind Assisi, which after eight kilometers pass Armenian before leading you another two kilometers into the hotel.

The hotel rooms are very well taken care of, and are truly an abode of rest and relaxation. They are quite rustic, but in a good way. The beds are good and you will enjoy opening your windows to let in the cool night breeze. This hotel does not have airconditioning in the rooms, but it does not really need it, as the whole structure is as solid as an Italian mansion on a hill can be.

What is good?

The pools, and especially the reflection pool, is good. On Sunday, the hotel organises a brunch - you will be charged extra for this if you attend - which is open to outside public but has a great ambiance.

The pools could be a bit better maintained, and there are a lot of insects, but then again, these you find everywhere close to water in Italy. If you don’t like insects, perhaps a countryside hotel is not where you want to be.

The restaurant serves good food. The menu could use a bit more creativity, but the dishes are well prepared. I find it a bit too expensive given what is offered and what you can find in nearby villages (at least 30 minutes driving, be warned), but it is certainly good food. The service is, as with everything service related in this hotel, excellent.

What could be improved?

If your heart goes out to a nice, hillside holiday away from anything disturbing your rest, nothing could be improved. You are 20 minutes away (if you are a good driver, that is) from Assisi.

If you want more events and entertainment, this is not the hotel for you. Rest is a central theme here, and they deliver it.

What I am mainly missing is a restaurant open during lunch, with a light lunch offered. That would have really made the holiday experience for us even better.

What didn’t we like?

We booked a chalet first, and we were a bit taken aback with how basic the chalets were. Again, our own fault for not checking, because the hotel is clear on the fact that these chalets are basic.

Nevertheless, the hotel was kind enough to let us move to the hotel itself for a very reasonable surcharge. That again typifies the hotel staff’s willingness to go to lengths to make you feel at home.

Would we visit again?

Perhaps not with our kids, who are 13 and 10 years old and look for a bit more excitement in the vacation. They did get tired of visiting old Italian hillside town and have their parents ooh-ing and aah-ing about them.

However, if I were to look for a couple of days alone with my wife, there is little hesitation that I would book a flight into the nearest airport, rent a nice red Italian car and drive up to the hotel for a couple of days. Or, if I needed to have some time alone to think or write, there are worse places to be.

This hotel comes recommended. If you visit, enjoy and say hi!

A refreshingly quiet and peaceful place in the middle of the national park, yet in easy driving distance to Assisi. Sitting by the pool listening to cuckoos calling, good food, wine, historic building, great countryside views and friendly staff made for a welcome break. Many thanks to the duty manager who kindly waited until after midnight while our sat-nav tried to route us goodness knows where in the forests. Plan your route to travel via Assisi ( we didn't) and you will be rewarded by a wonderful haven of tranquility.
