We spent a couple of hours with the charming owner who explained the process from vine to bottle. We visited the cellars and tasted several different wines. It was great to have a tour by someone so knowledgeable.

It's great to find places like this that want to take time to explain about the wines. Having soil samples on display from different climats was a first for me. Family run and producing a lovely range of wines.

N.B. Don't be misled by Pouilly Fuissé and other Maconnais wines not having Premier Cru status (some of the wines are just as good as the 1er Crus from the Cote d'Or) - due to one of the bizarre quirks of history and the French AOC system, there are NO designated 1er Cru wines around here, apparently because when the 1er Cru sites were designated no-one here applied for the designation (See http://www.wineandspiritsmagazine.com/S=0/news/entry/burgundys-southern-cote-pouilly-fuisse-recovers-its-lost-prestige for why the German occupied zone in the war ended up with lots of 1er cru wines and the Vichy France zone didn't!). This may change in the next few years, but until then, look for wines with named climats / vineyards - Chateau de Fuissé offers three!

P.S. I've put "no charge" for this attraction as they didn't charge for a tasting - but clearly do charge if you want to buy wine (as you probably will)! Also for "Food available for purchase", food means wine!

The Pouilly Fuisse vineyard was exceptional. The wine was exceptional. The owner, sorry I cant remember her name, but she will tell you the story of the vines being passed down through her family for over 300 years. She took me and my husband through the caves and explained the process of their wine making. Then we went for a tasting and more education about the vineyard, and were explained the types of wines they offer and got to choose 3 that we wanted to taste. The wine was amazing. We bought two bottles. Drank one over the next few evenings of our trip and brought one home.

I want to highly recommend a tasting and visit to Chateau Fuisse, in the village of Fuisse. We stopped by yesterday afternoon(yes, on a Monday, it was open). The lady who did the tasting, is also the owner, of a winery, that has been in the same family for generations. It is a large holding, with the most wonderful wines. She took a lot of time to explain the "terroir" of their 140 plots, and the positions of the vines, in relation to the slopes, sun, etc. A really informative, and personal session. We didn't feel rushed at all, and enjoyed all of the wines we tasted, and bought a couple of the Les Brules, which is produced from just one plot. It was a really enjoyable stop, and since we are here for another couple of months, will go back and taste what we didn't yesterday. You won't be disappointed, if you are a fan of this wine.
