“One of the most beautiful settings ever”
Reviewed 4 March 2014

We really enjoyed our stay at la bastilla. What an amazing setting, utterly beautiful - small flowers in the grass and more types of trees and birds than you can count! This is a project run by the local tourism and agriculture college (set up by the la bastilla finca owner and various charity projects), so it's not meant to be a fancy luxury lodge - and all the better for it! The staff were incredibly friendly and kind, the food delicious, and we loved staying in a tent, on our own private deck, private bathroom, and the best shower we've had in all of nicaragua - the hot water just kept on coming! It's a great place to relax, read a book, go for a walk into the forest, see some birds, and hear the insects chirping and the birds singing. I don't think their marketing does the place justice!

I would highly recommend this place, unless you don't don't enjoy nature and tranquility. I loved the "deck camping" (my kind of camping, with a comfortable mattress in the tent). I had my own deck with chairs overlooking the beautiful forest. The private bathroom had hot water, which was great because it is a little cool up there (which I also loved, but bring a jacket for the evenings). I also really enjoyed the coffee tour and learning a little bit about the technical school that works together with the ecolodge. Food and accommodation prices here are a little higher than my usual budget in Nicaragua, but I didn't mind because profits are for a good cause - the ecolodge helps support the technical school, which seems like a really great partnership (you can read more about it on the website if you're interested). Be sure to bring a good book if you are traveling solo. I was the only customer for the two days I was there, so I spent a lot of time reading on the deck!

I stayed here for 3 nights in a tent platform. The tents were huge, allthough the mattress supposed to be for 2 people was really very small and didn't make for the most comfortable sleep. Attached is a private bathroom with hot water ( a rarity in Nicaragua)
The views from the platform were amazing. You are in the middle of the cloud forest surrounding by lots of birds, The location is the main asset of this ecolodge, you really feel like you are in paradise! There are nice walks to do in the forests, seeing coffee pickers, coffee plants, lots of birds and beautiful forest.
The food was ok-ish, nicely presented allthough lacking taste. Be prepared for long waits, service is very very slow!
The ecolodge is part of a coffee plantation and the agricultural technical school students are involved. It is really interesting to see the coffee pickers at work, going to the school where the director gave me some information about the project, ...
Staff was friendly but for the first few days the woman at the reception seemed pretty indifferent to answering my questions. I think they should promote the school project and non-profit aspect a lot more. I found more info on the website than I did on site! I gave it a "very good" review mainly because of the location and because the ecolodge is really involved in the development of this rural population.

Our group wasn't sure we would make it to the Lodge in time for dinner, but the young student staff was waiting standby to take our orders and custom cook each and every meal. So delicious was breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. While visiting La Bastilla Ecolodge, be sure to take the guided tours around the cloud forests and the coffee plantation, completely staffed with students learning the trade of not only producing coffee to export, but gardening and making cheese. Belkis, our guide, spoke perfect English and was full of knowledge of the area, and was quite tolerant of our American ignorance and continuous laughter. Definitely a place to visit for a real feel for the country of Nicaragua and its residents, and to relax in the feel of nature completely surrounding you. The cottages were very comfortable for sleeping and the rocking chairs on every porch was a welcome sight.

Getting here was an absolute adventure, with potholes, dirt roads, steep inclines and tiny bridges to cross but the rewarding views and feeling of being at the end of the Earth were worth it.

The young student staff did a fantastic job cooking and everything was managed by the beautiful, kind and competent Belkis.

The cabins are very simple and electricity sparse, but all we really needed were the rocking chairs and the decks and we were golden! A couple creatures found there way to our Cheetos so keep any food well stored.

The coffee tour and tasting were very interesting and the whole project seems to be doing a lot of good for people who really need it.

So glad this place exists and I look forward to another adventure here!

Placed in a gorgeous coffee plantation in a cloud forest this lodge is part of an educational project aimed to give young poor people notions and skill for a better future. The students work in several areas (farming, raising animals, cheese production) and run the hotel. There are dormitories, private bungalows and large comfortable tents with bathroom, all surrounded by plants and trees. We had a bungalow with bathroom (and very hot water) and a balcony with a stunning view on the valley. We had lunch in the restaurant and dinner served on our balcony, both delicious, made with the produce of the estate. Breakfast is included, good and abundant. The staff composed by students is very kind and efficient. The lodge organizes different tours. The two we chose were excellent, one was the tour of the school business it was very interesting and the coffee tour was just amazing and included coffee-tasting, a treat. The forest is a wonderful hiking place and if you're lucky the night shines with millions of stars and resounds with crickets, frogs and birds. Of course you lack things like WiFi or plugs in your room (but you can recharge near the restaurant and pay with credit card) and the road to arrive is not that easy but the experience is really worth a little effort. The price is also very good 15$ for the dorm,30$ each person in a double room. If you happen to be in the area don't miss this place.

I just came back to Jinotega after being in this ecolodge for a few days.
I travel quite a lot, and have been in similar ecolodges all over the world.
This place is different. Something about it is magical. Perhaps the natural immense green beauty of the place. It might be the fantastic maintanace and conditions of the place. It is clean, modern, has all the amenities as anywhere else Ive been to. The food is phenomenal.
There is not a lot to do, other than just relaxing in the beautiful cabins, walking around this gorgeous forest and just enjoying life.

But the most imressive thing about this place are the people. The friendliest people I have ever met. They are always worried and concerned about the guests, not because they need to, or because they want something back, they are just the kindest people ever. Once you get there, you will experience this and understand my meaning.

The two people that specifically I was most impressed with are the manager, Belkis: She is a young and super motivated and smart person. Speaks perfect english, and loves making the guests stay as convenient and fun as possible. She has a huge heart, a constant smile and just meeting her and knowing her was a big bonus.

The other person who is amazing is Sandra, the cook. Shes been there for years and is practically the mother of all the students who work in the colegio. The food she makes is by far the best in nicaragua. She is a person full of love and happiness and will really go out of her way to make every guest smiling and happy.

I am really surprised that this place is not seeing more guests. This is by far the best thing Ive done in nicaragua, and one of the best stays ive ever had.

Try it, trust me, it will leave unforgetable memories. Pure magic.

Yair

Dear Yair,

thank you very much for sharing your experience with everybody on TripAdvisor and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay!
Belkis and Sandra, just like the students from the La Bastilla Technical Agricultural High School, are very happy to hear that the work that they love doing gets appreciated.
We wish you all the best for any further travels and do hope to welcome you back in our own little corner of paradise soon!
