We had a night here before a trip out on Doubtful Sound. The location and house itself could not be improved (it helps if you are the first person to build in a new place!). Philippa is a wonderful hostess. Altogether to be recommended, unless you value power showers over other amenities - in which case try somewhere else!

Stayed here one night by myself on my way back from Milford Sound. Philippa was very welcoming and offered me a beer on arrival, which I appreciated. The room was nice and spacious, and there was a great view from the back deck. Breakfast was good with a nice mix of both fruit, yogurt, and hot items.

I only removed one star because the internet was a bit spotty, but that is somewhat excusable since it’s a bit remote.

Thanks for taking the time to submit a review. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our special place. Sorry about the Wifi - we do experience the odd blip now and again due to our remote location - hoping for new technology in the region soon! Thanks for staying! Philippa

This is a very special b&b with lots of character and warmth and an amazing outlook over the water and mountains behind. Plus Philippa was a very helpful host. We enjoyed our supper in the local motel.

Robert and Philippa were welcoming hosts. Philippa was very helpful before we arrived booking a Doubtful Sound day cruise for us and then making restaurant bookings during our stay. Breakfasts were good with fresh fruit, cereals, toast and cooked options and were served early if you were doing the 8 a.m. boat trip.
On the other hand, although we realise the Fjordland area is expensive we didn't feel Murrell's represented particularly good value. Rooms were less well equipped than other places we stayed - no fresh milk for tea and coffee, one very small bar of soap which failed to last the three days of our stay, no bathrobes and a rather old-fashioned shower. We found it perfectly adequate but no more and yet it was the most expensive B &B we stayed at during our three week trip.
We had a comfortable good sized ground floor room with a great view towards the mountains and lake. However, other guests use the table and chairs on the verandah outside the window which can feel intrusive. An upstairs room might be a better choice.

Manapouri has a beautiful location and is the best place to stay for Doubtful Sound boat trips. Evening eating options were limited. We were disappointed by the local motel and drove to Te Anau, which has a good range of restaurants, on our second and third nights. The drive is about 15 minutes but it's worth it.

Hi

Thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are sorry if you felt that our property is expensive compared with other places that you stayed during your holiday. We do provide bathrobes in the closet of all of our rooms and we are more than happy to supply fresh milk and extra soap if requested. We also supply a hairdryer, heater, bathroom amenities and most items people need when they are travelling - we are usually on hand to ask if guests have any special requests or can't find something.

I am glad that you found the room comfortable - apart from the shower. Most of our guests stay here to enjoy the stunning uninterrupted lake and mountain views, the World Heritage Fiordland National Park on the doorstep and our unique 130 year history of hospitality in Fiordland. We have 4 guest rooms - all on the same level.

We were very fortunate they had two available rooms for our very impromptu visit to Manapouri. The owners are terrific folks with a wealth of knowledge of the area (third generation residents). Clean, quiet, magnificent views and terrific walks. Breakfast was delicious, nice jams!!

Thanks for your review - it was a pleasure to meet you and I am glad that we could host you. Glad you liked the jams too! Robert is the fourth generation of Murrells to run the house for visitors to Fiordland - we've been doing it continuously since 1889 so in that regard we are unique in New Zealand and perhaps the world! Thanks for staying with us. Philippa
