Description: Nestling in a gloriously green woodland valley, two miles from Barnstaple, Broomhill is a stunning late Victorian hotel with a twist ... there is fantastic art everywhere. With an award-winning restaurant, contemporary art gallery and sculpture gardens displaying an eclectic collection of over 300 sculptures, Broomhill sits in 15 acres of magnificent wild woodland valley and beautifully cultivated gardens. Broomhill’s award winning Terra Madre restaurant subscribes to the ‘slow food’ philosophy with respect for authentic produce and local ingredients paramount to our offering ... pure celebration on a plate. Consisting of mainly Mediterranean cuisine inspired from our travels, and using fresh, organic, fair trade produce from neighbouring farms and the coast, the menu affords splendid choice and excellent value. Pre-booked, 3 course lunch and dinner is served in our intimate restaurant or Tapas and bar meals are served in the Gallery or on the sun-warmed terrace. We invite you to experience our blend of hospitality and passion, inextricably linked through art and food.

We had quite a journey from one end of Exmoor to the other to get here, but it really was worth it! The dining room was lovely and bright, the art work was interesting, the tables were tastefully decorated and laid and, most of all, the staff were friendly and welcoming, informal and informative!
We booked for a three course lunch and it was difficult to choose from the selection as they all sounded so good! Our youngest is coeliac but this was not a problem and they were very helpful, no fuss at all and he could have nearly everything on the menu. [ so important ].
The portions are very generous, the chef obviously wants to feed his guests and deliver full on flavour too. We were all presented with a 'amuse bouche', a lovely breaded arancini ball, full of flavour on a spoonful of herby labneh, and our youngest had a stuffed pepper with labneh...perfect! Butternut squash soup was flavoursome, mussels and linguine were perfect, plump creamy Exmouth mussels and a delicious cooking liqour. A trio of ham hock terrine, croquette and duck liver parfait was generous, and the slab of parfait was as good as any 'bloc de foie gras'. [ I would return for that alone!].
Main courses were equally generous, and all so full of flavour. A Moroccan style lamb casserole with cutlet and Merguez sausage instantly reminded me of eating out in Turkey, venison casserole was rich and tasty and pork belly with fava bean mash and chorizo was unctous, tasty and filling.
Finding room for dessert was difficult, but we ploughed on, all were fantastic. Couple that with generous portions of home breads and butter [ gluten free was gorgeous] and a sensible well priced selection of lovely wines [ we had a Carmenere ], and you have true perfection.
For me, the duck liver parfait will now be on my 'last supper' menu !
Well done to the owners and chef, we would recommend this to everyone. I hope that we return someday.

When we were seated, the chef very kindly made us each a mini starter as a taster and as I am gluten free and could not have what the others had, he made me an aubergine, pepper and cheese tower which was delicious. We all had different tapas but considering there were 9 of us ladies, were nearly all servied at the same time. They got 2 of the meals in a muddle but it was soon rectified. We all had desserts and coffee and a really good lunch was had by all. There are options for gluten free and I was served gluten free bread toasted to go with my tapas which was done automatically without me having to ask for it which was very impressive.

We ate at the hotel as we were staying the night. We were offered the Christmas meal menu and the tapas menu to read at our leisure in our room. We decided to try the tapas menu. We ordered three dishes each and they were amazing. They tasted delicious and each mouthful was an adventure!! Super experience. We also had a dessert which was included in the good value price. I had a chocolate and cherry brownie which was served with homemade ice cream and my husband chose the homemade advocat ice cream. They were both served with a chocolate meringue and were absolutely gorgeous. Breakfast the next morning was also superb with fresh fruit, yoghurts, home made muesli bars and a choice of a full cooked breakfast, any part of a cooked breakfast you fancied or trout and scrambled egg. We were also served with plenty of toast (I think the bread was homemade too) and as much coffee or tea as we wanted. Highly recommended.

Comfortable restaurant with an intimate feel. Beautiful, subtle Christmas decor. Very interesting and wide choice of food on the menu and beautifully presented once served. Each dish was full of subtle flavours and a delight to eat. An extremely enjoyable evening with excellent service, our only regret was that we didn't stay over night, we will next time!!
