We recently stayed at The Beloved hotel from 7/25-8/1 with a large family, four different groups, 11 people total. We were very impressed with this hotel. At times, it felt like we were the only people there, which is so unique and different to other hotels that are AI.
I personally have stayed next door at the Excellence Playa Mujeres during my honeymoon last year in September 2011. We chose the Beloved Hotel as they do allow children at the hotel (one of the families we were traveling with had older children, 15 and 12). Rooms are exactly the same as the Excellence next door, with the same bathrooms and showers. We found that as long as you draped a towel over the front shower door, it provided enough privacy for those traveling as a family. Mini bar and bottles of alcohol were a great addition and found that if you ask nicely, you can exchange some of the bottles of alcohol to your preference (two of our groups exchanged Johnny Walker with Crown Royal, our room exchanged Johnny Walker for Jack Daniels)
Food overall was very good. I would say personally, I prefer the food at the Beloved vs the food at Excellence Playa Mujeres. There were many options at Lupita and Isla Grill, which were our favories.. FYI- they are also still offering the night pass over to EPM if you book more than 7 nights. We went to go see the MJ show and ate at the Lobster House, which our group enjoyed. Younger kids stayed behind with their parents.
Activities and things to do around the hotel were great, perfect for a low key vacation. While there was nightly activites (we enjoyed the bonfire on the beach with the DJ) the resort gets very quiet around 11:00 pm.. We enjoyed meeting up at the Lupita Lounge for cocktails, sushi and some light music around 6:00. Around 7:00 we would go to dinner. After dinner we would go back to Lupita Lounge for some more cocktails and dancing. The DJ was great! We did bring a CD with song selections from each person traveling within our group and the DJ was happy to play the CD, mixing it as he went along. After 9:30 or so, kids were gone and most of the adults were as well. It seemed like we were the only ones at the lounge after 9:45 or so. To address kids at the resort, yes, there are kids, and they were mostly under the age of 10. The children were well behaved. When we did see children crying or fussing, it was usually because the parents were choosing not to address it.
We also booked an excursion through one of the tour groups, which was outstanding. We booked a private catamaran that took us snorkeling, swimming with the dolphins, and on a little tour of Isla Mujeres. By far, some of the best money we spent. Since we were traveling with a large group, they gave us a great price for all three things. Our guide, was extremely accomodating, even offering that if we wanted to go somewhere specific (we wanted to go to Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres) the catamaran would take us there.
Finally, what makes this resort so great, is the staff. I've never seen so many people who seem to really enjoy what they do. Special thanks to Alex, Raquel, Edgar, Conception, Pablo, and so many others. We saw Alex as we were sitting in one of the groups casista pools, walking late one afternoon and called him over just to say hi. He offered to go get us a round of drinks, even though this was not his assigned "area". While we were conversing, he mentioned he was about to leave in 10 minutes and he was going to be off for the weekend and we wished him well. Without asking, as his shift was ENDING or was already OVER, he brought us another entire round of drinks, memorizing exactly what each of us had ordered the time before. THAT is outstanding customer service. We expected to tip and did tip when the service was excellent.. and for them, that was nearly every time. I can imagine that a group of 11 people, most who have had drinks throughout the day can be kind of overwhelming, but they seemed genuinely happy to be helping us. It takes very special and talented people to serve others, and we found that this staff operated well above expecations. I would venture to say better than most of the service I get here in the US.
Part of our group also played Golf, and went to the Spa, each which were great experiences as well. Spa was very nice. Aqua Viva treatment was unique and added something extra that made the services well worth the price. I do recommend waiting until you are at the resort to book your service. I found that the spa deals of the day were better than the 20% pre booking discount (unless you are wanting something specific)
Overall, I would highly recommend this resort. If you love and need to have nightlife that ventures beyond 11:00 pm, you might want to check out EPM, which offers many more options as far as bars and social events. If you are looking for a low key, relaxing and vacation to reconnect with family and friends, this will be a great choice for you.
