We have been coming to Holmhill Steading cottage every summer for four years ( five visits including one in spring when the gardens were covered in daffodils & bluebells ) and I have yet to attempt a review because I really don't think I could adequately express just how perfect everything is here) I can describe all the great things about the cottage , the gardens & grounds but It's how you 'feel' being here that is the impossible bit .
It's the perfect escape and you can feel yourself relaxing within two minutes of turning into the leafy drive of Holmhill , within another two minutes you will have stepped through the French doors into the cottage garden and have decided that you will be coming back even before your holiday has begun.
The cottage is a beautiful steading conversion which has everything you could possibly need , our favourite bits are Rosie's shortbread ( which our grandsons race in for ) the super king beds & beautiful bed linens that guarantee you wonderful sleeps after busy days and the huge soft towels to wrap up in after coming out of the gorgeous showers .
There's plenty to keep the family amused and children will love to visit the paddock to feed the horses , throw tennis balls for Maddie & Freya ( the black labs) as well as playing on the trampoline and the new super red swing . The gardens are beautiful and perfect for 'hide and seek'
For the grown ups the magic is in the garden and the far reaching views of the gentle green landscape that surrounds Holmhill the patio being the most lovely place to sit and soak it all up morning , noon or night . From here the 'default' view is stunning any time of day .Summer evenings at Holmhill taking in the views and the quiet of the countryside is good for your soul as they say !!
The cottage feels like you are in the middle of the countryside but is set just at the edge of Thornhill village ( two minutes away ) so you have access to coffee shops ( Thomas Tosh ) , Marchbanks the bakers , Renwicks the butcher and a great traditional Italian cafe & Fish and Chip Shop as well as the rather nice Buccleugh & Queensberry Arms hotel & restaurant .
Thornhill has developed over the years but has lost none of its charm and friendliness in the process.
Holmhill is a great base from which to explore Dumfries and Galloway and we discover new places every visit . For the children Drumlanrig Castle Adventure playground is excellent , take a picnic and spend the whole day exploring the grounds .
Mabie Farm Park is just 10 minutes west of Dumfries and is a fantastic blend of adventure playground & animal farm ( acres of it , again plan a whole day ) . Ten minutes east of Dumfries is Dinosaur Park & Soft Play Centre at Hetland Garden Centre. Our latest favourite find is Drummuir Farm Ice Cream Parlour ( just before Dinosaur Park )
The coast isn't far , Sandyhills, Rockcliffe & Kippford all lovely little places .
Apart from all this one of the nicest things to do is drive all the country roads around Thornhill , Moniave , Dunscore etc. We have discovered some great wee places , Maxwelltown church , the wee tin church at Dalswinton ( see the painting in the main bedroom of the cottage ) , the Andy Goldsworthy cairn on the Penpont road and many more .
Our favourite thing of all though is to come back to the cottage !
Thank you Rosie and Stewart for being the most welcoming and friendly hosts , for all the hard work you have put in to make Holmhill the delightful haven that it is and most importantly sharing it !!

Many thanks for taking the time to submit your review. This is the most comprehensive and generous review ever, and as well as saying many nice things about Holmhill you've also provided a great promotion of some of the lesser known gems of the area. We really do appreciate this.

I'm not sure where to start, extremely welcoming couple when showing us around & to our room. The room was very spacious, a plug socket next to the bed & the most comfortable single bed I've ever stayed it! The bathroom was the size of most hotel rooms & completely faultless. I generally stay in hotels and feel slightly uncomfortable in B&B's however the owners were amazing and truly the best hosts you could ask for. This really is a hidden gem! I'd love an excuse to come back.

Excellent stay and Rosie and Stewart could not have been more helpful. Beautiful place, immaculate yet friendly. We are definitely coming back again.

Very peaceful location and close to Thornhill, with the BQA and the Moniaive Chocolatier especially popular
