“Stunning hotel, fab food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2008

My husband and I stayed 1 night at this lovely Chateau on our way through France. It is such a great find in an area lacking in decent hotels and deserves to be associated with the Relais du Silence group. The Chateau itself is beautiful and the garden and grounds are lovely and incredibly quiet.

We were met at the front door by 2 lovely ladies from reception and offered a welcome drink. Our room was very nice with a queen size, comfortable bed. The large bathroom, with separate shower, was equipped with plenty of toiletries, towels and a powerful hairdryer. There were also towels supplied for use at the outdoor swimming pool.. Each bedroom has the name of a bird, ours was Nightingale, and we were offered the option of waking up to a recording of this bird rather than the normal alarm call......nice touch.

The Chateau is itself only offers bed & breakfast but within its grounds is the restaurant "La Grange aux Oies" and what a fab place! The setting and decor is stunning and, according to the Chateau owner, was redesigned by a British team. The menu choice is small but all choices sounded lovely and did not disappoint. The wine list was well priced and had choices to suit most people. We would not be surprised if in the near future the restaurant attracts a Michelin star.

The only disappoint was breakfast which would have been better if more choice was available......maybe we should have asked?

Would we return?............you bet and for longer next time.

When we arrived, we were greeted by the hotel staff. The lady checking us in was extremely pleasant and helpful. She showed us to the room and in the bathroom, informed us that the previous visitors had a little accident and spilled a lot of water next to the shower on to the carpet and the underlying hardwood floors. They had put some towels on the wet area to cover it up for now. Nothing serious. The room itself was pretty big, with some nice flowers on the table (which are refreshed every day). The bathroom looked fine at first glance, but when we wanted to use the shower, we noticed that the shower had had it's best time. The doors where almost completely out of the hinges and the shower head itself was fixed with a rather nasty looking nail to keep it from sliding down.

Breakfast was served in a nice looking room (or hall if you wish) by again a very friendly member of staff. The choice however, was pretty limited and the cereals tasted as if they were already for days out in the open.

The castle itself is gorgeous and the grounds are very nice to have a silent walk.

The last night, we went to the restaurant and the food served there was indeed top notch. A bit annoying however were the repetitive questions of the hotel staff whether or not they should reserve a table for you. 3 times per day was no exception.

This being said, I would for sure recommend staying here. The staff is very friendly and attentive and the castle itself makes up for a unique setting.

Snow as on the ground when we arrived but the welcome was very warm. We were given the suite, the bathroom is in the tower and very luxurious. It was a great experience to be sleeping surrounded by so many antiques and grand furniture. The restaurant is across the courtyard but again very welcoming and atmospheric. The food was possibly the best we have eaten on our seven week trip across France and Spain. We would stay there again.

Staff at this chateau were very friendly and helpful. The best bit however was the restaurant for dinner. It turned out to be the best food of our trip and the dessert was something to behold. Rooms were large if a little dated but big bathroom and pretty aspect made up for this.

In the heart of the beautiful countryside of the Charente departement, as you travel along a side road, the magnificent and haughty, chateau de Nieuil comes into view. Beautiful Renaissance facades, fat round towers surrounding the main building, a water-filled moat, a formal garden - after just that first glance you will want to stay the night, for a weekend, or for even longer ! Francois I had the right idea - the Chateau de Nieuil was one of his favourite hunting residences. Majestic trees, green lawns and a peaceful lake all add to the calm and peacefulness of the place.
