“Fabulous Small Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2007

Located about 15 minutes south of Namur, Belgium, this small Country Inn has tremendous charm, a unique private setting, and wonderful food.
Formerly part of the Relais and Chateaux chain, it retains exceptionally high standards of comfort at very reasonable rates. Overall, it has to be one of the best secrets for great value.

Few things please the weary traveler more than discovering an out-of-the-way wonder that welcomes you and treats you like an old friend. Le Moulin des Ramiers was exactly that.

This country inn was a long shot. Although we had been in and out of Belgium before, we had no real experience outside of Brussels, which we wanted to avoid this time, other than the airport.

Le Moulin des Ramiers, (Le Moulin means "mill,") came to my attention in one of the older Relais & Chateau directories, which I have used many times for finding a top of the line property in the US as well as abroad. R&C places are almost always VERY expensive, but seldom disappoint in terms of ambiance, quality, comfort and cuisine.

Le Moulin des Ramiers is no exception, although they told us that they had dropped out of R&C, (voluntarily), because of the high commissions charged by the group. I have heard this before. It is worth noting that R&C, and many other directories, charge a lot to be listed and the property has to make quite a bit of money just to stay even.

I initially booked one night. We got there, driving south from Brussels on a major high speed autobahn and then used our maps from the internet to find our way to the tiny village of Crupet, which isn't even on many maps. The village itself is poetic. Well kept houses, a few B&B's, a single hotel in the center of town and a Church with a grotto and great walking paths.

The Inn we wanted was a short walk from town along the river, just a few hundred yards from a gorgeous old chateau that is fully restored, (no tours). The stone buildings of the inn are 18th century and well taken care of with modern facilities. Our room was the largest in the hotel, on the second floor. The stairs up to the floor wind around the old water mill works, carefully preserved and picturesque.

Room and bath were perfect. A blend of modern and old world, most comfortable and roomy. A single king size bed was perfect.

The restaurant is in a separate building and we walked along the river and met the local ducks and the owners' white terrier dog, Biscote, then confirmed our dinner reservations, which I had made with the booking on line.

Dinner was superb. The wine list is extensive and carefully tended. The chef is the second generation chef of the same family and knows his menu, buying local ingredients and literally cooking most everything himself. The menu is comprehensive enough to suit nearly any tastes. We had a variety of seafood and game with selected wines with each course. The scallops are a local specialty and delicious in any of the several dishes offered.

We had no problem with language and we speak only a bit of French, no Flemish and a bit of German, so one should never be deterred from trying these places fearing for not knowing the language.

Bottom line is that we enjoyed our first night so much that we extended for another night and had an equally enjoyable dinner.

Breakfast is served in the hotel building and is cooked to order.

THE COST:
As I said, the property is flawless. Service, accommodations, menu, cuisine, comfort, ambiance and location are all the best. This is NOT the Ritz Carlton, so one should not expect the same sort of amenities one finds in an urban hotel. But for rest and relaxation with no strain, this is a great place to visit.

Our total tab, including 2 major dinners, wines, 2 breakfasts, two nights in the best room, and all other costs and fees, was a little over $800 US. One must factor in the add-on fee that our credit card, (MasterCard) added to the costs, plus the dollar/euro conversion. Considering that Brussels hotels are charging $250-400 US a night for just a room, this was a great deal.

Our side trips during the day included a drive to the historic city of Bastogne and a castle tour on the french border.

A CAUTION ABOUT CURRENCY:
[In some 40 years of European travel, this was the first time I have ever NOT been able to exchange US dollars for local currency (Euro) in banks. Only at the airport were we able to convert currency. I was told this is because of two factors: the dollar is not stable against the Euro and banks do not want to get caught in the middle. Also, the Euro is now basically European currency and there is no need for banks and post offices to offer exchange because there is not enough demand for foreign currency exchanges.

Because of this and the credit card rip-off fees now being added on by Master Card and Visa, my next trip will be with Euro cash and the credit cards will stay in the wallet for emergencies. Buying Euros in advance at a favorable rate is now practical because of the fees and the local conversion costs.]
