“perfect place in Cinque Terre”
Reviewed 14 June 2011

There are 2 main reasons to stay in this apartment - Volastra is a beautiful base away from all the tourist craze of the other towns but centrally located for hiking, and the wonderful family of Marco, Marta, and Serena who really make sure your stay is a special one. Excursions on their small fishing boat and up the mountains into the vineyards, tastings of their own wines, and general friendliness and helpfulness turned a great trip into an amazing one.
The 2-bedroom (but no living room or sofa) apartment is spacious, very clean, and well-equipped with a washing machine and large bathroom, and the lovely private garden across the street makes up for the lack of views and relative darkness of the interior spaces, which if you spend most of your time outside, and you should, is not a problem. The shuttle bus to Manarola is very convenient, and although the last bus up the mountain is at 7:30pm, the family will drive you back afterwards so that dinner in Manarola is possible. The walk from Volastra to Corniglia was my favorite one of area. Overall I would highly recommend staying in Volastra and in the Il Carugio apartment.

My husband, our toddler, and I stayed here and it was one of the most memorable parts of our wonderful 5 week trip around Italy. As other reviewers have mentioned, Volastra is a short drive from Manarola, and there is a shuttle bus that runs between the two towns. We were there during off-peak season, and I imagine it would be quite nice to be staying in Volastra during peak season, as it would be quieter than the Cinque Terre towns, but close enough to explore them.

Our hosts, Marta and Marco, were extremely warm and welcoming, and made our stay extra special. They met us in Manarola and drove us up to Volastra, taking the time to stop at scenic spots along the way. They were so lovely and made us feel like family, and I'm sure my daughter thought Marta must be a long lost aunt because she made such a fuss of her!

The accommodation was clean and comfortable, and had everything we needed, including a washing machine.

Marta and Marco's daughter, Serena, was extremely helpful, and went above and beyond in her efforts to help us to hire a car for the next leg of our journey.

We will always remember our stay in Volastra, and our lovely hosts!

If you want to see the real Cinque Terre, I cannot recommend this place enough - Marta and Marco made our stay absolutely unique and unforgettable. It was like having your favourite aunt and uncle on hand downtown to introduce you to the locals, explain the quirks and history of the land that has been in their family for generations, point out the best view points, walks, squeeze you in at the most exclusive restaurants – but the highlight of our trip was when they happily took us out not only on a private tour of the vineyards but on a boat trip along the coast - absolutely breathtaking!
We went there on the last stop of our north italy road-trip honeymoon and at no point did we find them intrusive either - they were just generous, genuine, lovely people who were happy to show us the real beauty of their landscape.
Volastra is within easy walking distance of Manarola, Riomaggiore and Corniglia - the apartment is clean, spacious, it has all the conveniences you could need. Il Carugio is a lovely flat tucked away in a quiet town that gets lively in the day with hikers. It has a gorgeous olive garden that we enjoyed the use of in the evenings with food from the local take-away 2 minutes away. I loved that it was just off the main tourist trail but never the less in the heart of the Cinque Terre - plus our generous hosts were always more than willing to give us lifts back up to Volastra in the evening if we got stuck.
I would highly highly recommend everyone I know to stay there, we had the most brilliant time. I have to say thanks again to Marta, Marco and Serena - it was all so wonderful it was like a dream, we hope to remain friends xxxx joanna e joseph

The appartment is situated in a small, quiet and tipical village above the Cinqueterre. There is a private garden where we ate every night in the middle of lemon trees and olive trees. Our host, Marta and Marco are wonderful. They made us feel at home and thanks to them, we had a unique experience that was above our expectation. If you are looking for a quiet place, far from tourist but close to Cinqueterre, with a fresh breeze at night, that's the place to go! Check their website for pictures.

It was so nice to stay there. The apartment was very clean and big. There is a garden with terrace in front of the appartement . We had the opportunity to visit the "CANTINA" = Wine cellar of the owner and had a wine tasting. He also made us visit all the nice places of the area. He knows all about the walking paths and his wife is also very helpful. We even had the opportunity to go on the wine train, a great experience.

Il Carugio was the perfect place to stay while we experienced Cinque Terre! A friend of mine had just stayed there a month before and highly recommended it. The owners, a lovely helpful and easy-going couple Marta and Marco, really made the experience to Cinque Terre exceptional. Marta greeted us in Riomaggiore to take us to Volastra and was full of information about Cinque Terre so we could maximize our two day visit. She gave us a little tour and then showed us where the hiking paths were. Il Carugio was perfect - a 2 bedroom apt with full kitchen and supplies which is ideal if you're staying for a few days and want to get some groceries. Marco was fantastic -- he drove us to a more secluded amazing hiking trail and then met us at sea level with his motor boat. He took us snorkeling and fishing! It was so above and beyond what we expected and we felt very lucky to have booked our lodging with them. Marta even called and made dinner reservations for us at this restaurant which worked out perfectly since there was a line when we arrived. Really wonderful and we were so appreciative of everything they did. And the price was so affordable -- we wanted to stay another night but they were booked. They even held onto our bags while we went out for the day (luggage) so we didn't have to pay additional money to store it or truck it along with us. Overall it was perfect and they really seemed to enjoy meeting us as much as we enjoyed meeting them! Benissimo!!

We booked Il Carugio online, and arrived not knowing what to expect. Our hosts Marco & Marta, and their daughter Serena were very welcoming and helpful. Marco and Marta speak a little English, but when we couldn't communicate Serena would be called to translate. We had the pleasure of being taken to a number of spots where tourists don't usually get to go - a drive around the region by Marco, complete with a ride on the winery tractor that took us up the hill to his vineyard and shown the best spots for amazing views In Volastra by Marta.

The main thing to know is that Volastra is the original town up on the hill that birthed Manarola (one of the 5 cinque terre villages). This means you catch the train to Manarolla, then a shuttle up to Volastra, which unfortuneatley isn't that frequent (1.5 hourly - though perhaps more frequent later in the summer). The more common thing to do is stay in one of the towns (eg Mararola itself) but we got the impression it would not have been peaceful and the facilities wouldn't have been anywhere near as good. Marco was great about running us up to the house when we missedd the shuttle.

The house itself is clean and comfortable, with cooking facilities and washing machine. While it doesn't have sea views there's a sunny garden to read in/ have a glass of wine. There is a small supermarket, a "gastronemia" (like a deli) and a restaurant in Volastra, all of which offer good, reasonably priced food - so you can cook in (perhaps with some of Marta's homemade pesto, yum!) or eat out.

You can access the walking high (as opposed to costal) track to Corniglia from Volastra (beautiful views), or go down to Manarolla and start form there.
