Well what can I say. A piece of hidden Irish history. Off the beaten track but worth seeking out. Lovely gardens and love the explanations along the way. Some views too.

Our expectations were not high, but the reviews were good and it stayed open in the evening, so we 'popped by'. To avoid company we opted to go to Claude's seat first and had forgotten that this part of the walk was supposed to be linear and to reach the garden you need to retrace your steps, but walking on led to a pleasant fishing lake, which we liked anyway. The real treat though was the garden overlooking the landscaped parkland. It is reached through a pleasantly wooded area bordering the chain of pools and once you have ascended the steps the garden is largely flat thanks to a huge supporting wall which could be climbed over by inquisitive youngsters. The gardens were tranquil, well maintained considering their location and are a lovely treat for the locals now that they are not the exclusive property of the gentry who paid for their creation.

This is a lovely place to walk and then to enjoy the beautiful gardens. It was delightful. Free entrance and parking. There is also a clean and new toilet facility.

It was a cold day in November when we visited so no flowers but it was still a nice spot for a Sunday walk. It is nice to see works are being done to improve the site as it is a very interesting place.

Lovely gardens just past Ballinakill on the Abbeyleix road. Parking ok and toilets were open. Pity there's no coffee shop but it's not far to Abbeyleix anyway. Beautiful gardens and totally unexpected as it's in the middle of nowhere. Really well maintained and a nice stroll with lake below.
