This was our second visit to Lusty Beg Island. Our previous visit was in August 2009 when we stayed in the Courtyard Motel. This time we were here for a weekend break (my birthday) with friends and stayed in one of the Luxury Lodges. We had a very enjoyable weekend with just a few minor issues, detailed below.

Yes (the good points):
Friendly, helpful staff (reception, bar, restaurant). Good food (bar, restaurant). Comfy beds, plenty of living/relaxing space

No (the bad points):
Cobwebs in bedrooms and bathroom. I expected a certain amount of spiders etc as the lodges are surrounded by trees, but the ones on the inside should have been removed before we arrived rather than me having to remove them later
Heating was on a timer - Ok in summer, but in October longer times would have been better. Unfortunately, the manual override didn't appear to work
Hot/Cold taps not labelled in one of the bathrooms. Ok for us as we were an all-adult party but not good for families with children as the water was very hot
Outside lights not working. Could easily have been checked/fixed before we arrived
No logs for the wood burning stove. They were delivered when we asked, but it would have been nice if they had been there waiting for us arriving
Very basic catering equipment, not what I expected from a 5 star listing. E,g only 6 plates. Fair enough, there were 6 of us, but what about a couple of spare plates for bread/accompaniments? Another couple of pots, pans etc, also wouldn't have went amiss.

Maybe (the odd stuff):
There are an awful lot of rules and regulations posted on everything that isn't nailed down. I agree with Leicestershirebloke's review (July 2010) that is a bit of overkill. Too many signs/notices. Anyway most of these 'rules' can be found on the information leaflet given to visitors on arrival, or in the folder in the lodge. We're on holiday to enjoy ourselves, seeing so many do's and don'ts is a bit like Hi-De-Hi gone mad. Maybe the owners/managers could investigate the possibility of reducing the number of notices we have to read?

In summary:
Would I recommend Lusty Beg Island? Yes
Would I go back to Lusty Beg Island? Yes, definitely
BUT
There is a lot of new self -catering accommodation in Fermanagh and Lusty Beg would need up its game to stay in the race. I have rated our stay 'average' because Tripadvisor doesn't have a 'good' option. On this visit I don't quite rate it as high enough for 'very good'. All the problems we encountered were minor ones, and easily fixed, however a little attention to detail before our arrival should have identified and sorted them. It would have made all the difference. On the whole, not bad at all, but could do better!

We are just home after staying on Lusty Beg island for 2 nights. We found the whole weekend relaxing and we were impressed with the high standard of accomodation and food served. I would draw particular attention to the entire staff - they were all so friendly and willing to help. Facilities were impressive, given we were on an island and, in particular the a lovely indoor swimming pool and sauna.

A great weekend.

I stayed here over a weekend for a friend's wedding. I loved the location and if you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing place to stay this is perfect. The room was comfortable and clean (although I never quite got the hang of the thermostat!).

My only complaint would be the food. On a Sunday there was a carvery at lunch and if you wanted something lighter you had to wait until four until bar snacks were served.

The staff were very helpful and accommodating.

We had booked this last minute but the very helpful staff were able to re-arrange some rooms and get us in. From when we arrived until we left (5 days), we had a wonderful experience. We stayed in one of the 5* lodges and apart from a few niggles (shelf missing in fridge, spiders in the rooms, etc) found them very well equiped. Whilst they are looking a bit tired, they are all being re-vamped over the winter months so will be pristine for next season with new sofas amongst other things.

The staff were incredibly friendly and were able to answer any questions / queries. The organised events for residents ranged from canoeing to archery, rounders to the assualt course so helped keep the kids occupied - the surprise BBQ burgers mid way through the canoe trip were a nice surprise ! Although there are no 'child' amenities (playpark, etc), they didn't notice and spent hours fishing off the jetty with small nets or cycling around the nature trails.

Having eaten in both the resturant and the bar, both can be recommended with a good menu selection in both (especially the fish chowder). Decent portion sizes and good quality food along with a reasonably priced wine list - not the best selection but the house wines were decent enough.

The atmosphere in the bar was friendly and the kids were always made welcome, despite being 'energetic'. The self-catering lodges are well enough equiped to live in but you do have to remember to shop. Saying that, the food in the bar is good value so we didn't eat-in too many nights.

You do have to plan to stay here as there are no shops on the island, even for bread / milk. The nearest shop is only 5 miles away but you do need to get the ferry off the island, but this is just a case of turning up and getting on. If you have access to a boat, then the private marina on the island can be used at no extra cost. Be warned though that if you have a boat, don't move it on Sunday afternoon as the marina becomes VERY busy with visitors coming for the food and entertainment.

The island mankes a great base location to explore the area (either by car or boat) and is only a short drive (20 miles) to Donegal & excellent surfing at Bundoran / Rosnowlagh.

+ points - friendly, quiet (or not), well equiped facilities, food / drink, relaxed atmosphere, location, spacious lodges (plenty of room for family of 5), variety of people (residents & visitors)
- points - swimming pool quite cold, no shop or provision for essentials on the island, too far away from us :-)

I got married at Lusty Beg in April this year and i really could not fault it!!

It was absolutely perfect!! caroline was fantastic as my wedding co-ordinator for the day. We decided to have it outside as the weather was excellent and there was no problems with that at all. I was so glad as it made the whole service so relaxed! The food was exceptional and i got loads of compliments on it even though it was down to the skills of the kitchen staff!!

A few guests didn't exactly want to leave the bar and had stayed until the small hours of the morning until finally deciding to go to bed. They were shocked to see the bartender that served them until the small hours was then preparing the breakfasts. They have lots and lots of respect for this guy!! ha ha!! The breakfast was gorgeous too!!

What can i say it was a totally perfect setting for a wedding!! I wish i could do it all again, especially have the dinner!!! :)

Just back from a wonderful stay at Lusty beg with my husband and four kids - ages 2 to 10.

This place really is a hidden gem, the island is just spectacular - very chilled out and lots to do on the island for the family with activities each day we were there e.g. canoeing, football competition, table quiz etc. The staff were just amazing, looked like they really enjoy what they do and helped us with anything they could.

Even the rain couldn't stop this place being simply stunning for enjoying some great family time together. The kids especially just loved the place, and we've already enquired about availability for later on in the year.

Great work to all at Lusty. We will certaintly be back.

We got married on this Island last year and kept meaning to write a review.
The Staff could not have been more accommodating and planned my wedding to perfection even allowing us the last minute option to get married outside if the weather improved. The wedding meal was just wonderful, food was gorgeous, hot and served promptly. Nothing was too much bother for Nicola and her team.
We stayed in a log cabin for the week with my children and extended family and it was the most relaxing lead up to the day itself.
I would not hesitate to recommend this venue as a wedding location.
Only downside is be careful when it rains if staying in log cabins, a lot of green moss had developed on the wooden flooring outside causing me to slip and fall and rip the skin of my leg only 40 mins before the wedding. Hopefully this is not an issue now.
