Having gone to a number of Motsunabe restaurant over the years, Yamanaka is highly recommended for those of you who prefer to eat a table instead of sitting on the floor. Practically all other establishments have you sit on the floor with very few, if any, having hori kotatsu (sunken kotatsu, similar to a table and chairs).

The motsu is good quality and tasty (highly recommend the miso broth). The price is reasonable (for Japan), as is the sake.

Yamanaka also has a pleasant interior well suited for dates, very different from other motsunabe restaurants that are more like izakaya that are crowded and noisy. As it is quite popular, I highly recommend you book a reservation in advance. It is practically impossible to simply walk in and eat there.

We took the nabe with miso, it was delicious. They have also a very good draft beer. It is a very big restaurant, better make reservation or you have to wait. I do not give 5 stars because of the ambience. They asked if we wanted smoking or non smoking table, we said non-smoking and we ended up isolated in a very small room, not really cozy. Just go in the large smoking rooms, the tables are enough isolated to not be bothered too much by the eventual smokers. I reccommend highly this place if you like to try the local nabe.

If you visit Fukuoka, u must try motsunabe during your trip, however some people dislike to eat the beef or pork offal (the offal used in motsunabe is mostly beef intestines but various kind of offal can be used) the base soup is usually soy sauce with garlic and chili pepper, or miso. If you think it's very oily then don't worry you can put more vegetables inside also ask for pomelo sauce, it's really matched!

A stew of beef bowel and vegitables served with noodle and/or rice. Not so greasy as we had expected. Delicious! You need reservation and they don't accept cerdit card. 30$/ person is enough.

This is a very reputable local restaurant so we had to try it - went on a Sunday night with almost no seats available, we didn't have a reservation but were lucky that we were given a 1 hour slot to eat and leave before time's up. Food came really fast after ordering so time wise worked out okay.
The menu pretty much only has beef intestines hotpot on there which is ~60% fat and 40% rubber texture beef intestines which are really hard to chew (maybe easier to swallow instead). But we did like the miso flavor hotpot soup which has miso and garlic, so if you want the experience (and not the intestines and fat!!), maybe go there and order a miso flavor soup base with additional vegetable + egg + rice to make it a porridge which tasted much better than a bunch of fatty rubbers...
