We enjoyed a fantastic meal at this omakase (chef choice) tasting back in September 2016. But I still feel it is worth the review. The restaurant is hard to find tucked away in an alley. But once we found it, we were greeted with warm hospitality. It was a rainy night and they took our wet drippy umbrellas for us. Once inside we were led upstairs where the sushi bar was. Seats about fourteen customers. We sat at one end and an hour later it was full house. We were given a choice of three different omakase meal sets. We chose the middle selection. Then, I selected a sake from the list for us. I believe it was Senshin, produced in Niigata.

We were started off with a nicely presented salad complete with a Japanese maple leaf. Then a couple of plates of sashimi. I can’t recall the first fish but it was followed by scallops. Followed by some nigiri sushi. Unfortunately, I can’t recall what each one was. Then sticky potato. Followed by more nigiri sushi. Then, another salad. Followed by uni nigiri sushi. I never knew I liked uni as the ones back home in Canadian restaurants are typically pretty horrible. This was delicious. Followed by ikura on rice. This was really nice as the ikura was milder and not overly fishy. Next came miso soup. Then shrimp nigiri sushi. Underneath the main shrimp body was chopped shrimp intestines which gave it a liver-like texture for the underlying seasoning. Then tamago. Another nigiri sushi. And three small rolls to wrap the dinner portion up.

They brought grapes for dessert and green tea to close off this incredible meal.

The most enjoyable part of omakase is that each piece is made, served and consumed. This means everything is very fresh. The rice is still warm. The fish is freshly prepared and everything stays together. Pieces are seasoned with freshly grated wasabi. The flavour and texture is so much better than powder mix or squeezed out of a tube. Each piece is then lightly brushed with shoyu (soy sauce). For those in the Western world, no dipping! In fact after eating the first two sashimi dishes they take away the shoyu dish. The rice was perfectly prepared, packed firmly enough to keep shape but gentle enough so the rice remains somewhat fluffy and not hard packed into a ball.

This was a real treat!! All staff, chefs and servers were very friendly and spoke English. Upon leaving our umbrellas were returned to us and our chef (unfortunately didn’t get his name) came down to thank us and see us off at the door. This was one of the best meals I have ever had, quality of food and quality of service. A fantastic over all experience! Next time we return to Tokyo, we will make another reservation. Speaking of which, we tried several times to make a reservation at another more famous place. They refused each method of attempt. However, I was able to secure a reservation at Ginza Sushi-Ichi through a simple e-mail found on their website. I highly recommend Ginza Sushi-Ichi.

During year end holiday period, it’s extremely difficult to find an above average sushi restaurant for dinner in Tokyo. Hotel concierge recommended this place.
Our reservation time is 8pm. We arrived early around 7:40pm. The greeter wasn’t friendly to start with when we knocked the door and he asked us to come back at 8pm. Noticed there was a bench by the door inside , and with freezing temperature at night, he literally kicked us out and wouldn’t not even offer us to sit and waited. Then we returned by 8pm and saw a couple females sat on the same bench. Really ?

We got off with bad start with his attitude and long face , absolutely unfriendly and not welcoming. Wonder if it’s racist discrimination against Asians...

We went up to the dining area with 12 counter seats When we were all settled in, all of us were foreigners, no locals. Something’s wrong ?

Anyway they asked us to choose the course out of the 3 on their menu. As I wasn’t too hungry I chose the 15k yen but chef immediately said not available and only 22k and 30k courses left.

There were two chefs and one apprentice to help out while having 3 others servers waiting behind you to clean up and serve . Overall service is exceptional (because they charge 10% on top of the bill which none of any Michelin star, or other local Japanese restaurant would do).

During the dinner , we noticed the two female guests almost finished while we were still being served dish by dish . Then we found out they have 15k menu which chef said not available and we sat down same time . We asked and they weren’t able to explain clearly but anyway we kept quiet and finished . Also we noticed 3 other guests who probably had 30k menu , they were served with a big abalone; giant clam; two different kinds of sea urchin, wow! Heard they were in same situation as ourselves who booked last minute and also recommended by our hotel concierge.

Anyway we finished and when we were leaving, the greeter and another server apologized to us about the confusion of menu choices, etc, but we didn’t bother to discuss any longer . We got off on the wrong foot from the beginning.

Conclusion are: -high quality fish ; high quality service

-Bad attitude and possible racial discrimination against Chinese . (Btw, the 2 females and 3 other guests mentioned were non Asians).
-10% service charge
-No local Japanese guests (which is strange in Ginza )

Took family there last night. The food was superb. Ingredients were of the highest quality. Chef recommended sake was the best. Staff very professional. Ambience was cozy. Just what a superior authentic Sushi place should feel like. Hope to visit again.

We were three colleagues dining in Ginza Sushi-Ichi. We ordered the "mixed" menu with about 18-20 courses. It started with wonderful sashimi, nigiri ....All was delicious and prepared right in front of us. A real experience. We had plum wine to go with parts of the meal. The only thing which we could have been without was the desert, which was almost like three jokes, the fruit salad was one grape and a small piece of another fruit, the ice cream sandwich contained nearly no ice cream squeezed between to tasteless crackers. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful. There were only two other guest present. There were three chefs behind the counter and three others at our side to serve us. It was maybe a bit over the top, it however led to that we felt very well taken care of. When we didn't understand what kind of fish that was served, they could show pictures from there Ipad or the chef showed us from his little book. It was not straight foreword to find the restaurant, it's found behind the Cartier building, the small street behind the building, look into the backyards, there are two wending machines and the restaurant is seen on the right side with a hidden, but beautiful entrance. All in all it was a true experience to visit Ginza Sushi-ichi and I would really recommend this restaurant.
