“Great location, good sized room with veranda”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2011

Stayed here as part of jurassic coast walking trip....eight days of walking staying in seven B & 's. This was on one of the best overall for cleanliness/ location/service, altough it was the most expensive!. some helpful pleasant staff in hotel and at dinner, which was very accaptable although again bit on the expensive side.
Breakfast was the best of all hotels for sure...bacon was delicious, very well cooked and lovely spicey sausage!

Room Tip: Room 21, good sized room which has veranda overlooking the cove

We were booked at the Bar Room at Bishops Lodge but could not come to terms with the cobwebs, smell of damp, dirty furniture, bare wire over the door, faulty lock on the room door,
windows over the bed and in the bathroom hopefully blocked off, wiring scattered about, old electrical appliance, wallpaper coming off the walls, damp by the window, mismatched and chipped crockery, overall feeling of now being wanted as customers and finally, the 'could not care less' attitude of the arrogant manager, and we left unable to get our deposit returned. Don't go there is my advice. Such a pity; the place has amazing potential-needs investment.

Hmm ok-ish for an overnight business stay but bring your wife or girlfriend and she will think your a miser!
Room ok until you look around at dust, mould and a large cobweb with a large spider sitting in it!
Bathroom tired, taps leaking, room door broken and hard to close.
I missed the breakfast and at 10am was told that I had to vacate the room!! Well after a 200 miles drive last night I wanted to sleep in a little, nope out you go!
There MUST be better places to stay round the area, give it a miss!

Room Tip: Grubby! go somewhere else.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Beach House Lulworth for two nights in the run up to the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Having left our decision to book until the last minute, we considered ourselves fortunate that the hotel had rooms to spare at such late notice. The owner, Lisle, was very honest in recommending a particular room for its quietness within the building. Furthermore, having just purchased a pair of kayaks, we were keen to utilise the hotels access to Lulworth Cove. The hotel staff not only suggested areas whereby we could store our gear out of sight, but even helped to move the kayaks themselves. This example of a ‘can do’ attitude was gratefully received and justified our choice in hotel.
During the booking process, we were advised that the hotel did not have its own parking, however an arrangement with the local Heritage Centre, 100 yards walk away, provided free parking with a ticket from the hotel. Before 10am however, it is possible to drive a car nearer to the hotel to load/unload. For those who insist on remaining connected with the outside world, Lulworth Cove makes a very efficient black spot to some mobile networks – as described on the website. However, the Lulworth Beach Cafe next door (well worth a drink in the evening) hosts a BT FON hotspot for those who need it (useful for checking weather/tides forecasts etc), and the hotel staff suggested that emergency calls could be redirected to the hotel.
Our double room was one of the smaller examples on offer, with a small but functional ensuite. Although the decor and carpet was a little tired, the room was clean, tidy and perfectly suitable to our needs. Also, the cooked breakfast was perfectly fine (great mushrooms!) and served in the pleasant restaurant downstairs.
The Beach House Lulworth presents itself exactly as described, i.e. a family run, 3-star, bed and breakfast. Anyone expecting 5-star, chain hotel opulence should look elsewhere. Your £100 per night essentially provides you with a clean, friendly environment – including a great cooked breakfast – to act as a base from which to explore the stunning Jurassic Coast and environs. Although not necessarily aimed at the kayaker, the hotel’s supreme location and welcoming attitude of its staff warrants a well-earned recommendation and we would certainly stay again.
Many thanks to Lisle and her team.

Room Tip: Ask on booking - the staff are very honest. Room 30 is small but very quiet

My Boyfriend and I booked a 2 night stay here for £100 a night. Being a local that now lives in London I am very sad to say this is not a true Dorset experience.
The staff were not overly friendly and did little to express any passion for the local beautiful area, food or people.

For £100 a night we expected a clean, restful room but we were faced with a very shabby room (room 26) that did not reflect its photo on their website. The wallpaper was grey and old with a dirty rim of a photo frame that had once sat on the wall.

The bathroom was very small and the shower showed signs of mould-not to mention the shower hose being so forceful it did not stay on the wall, which made it very very difficult to shower properly!

The breakfast was another disappointment; the options were full English with a vegetarian option and poached eggs on toast. It was very disappointing to not have any fish option what with the hotel being so close to the sea! The cutlery was stained and it took the waitress twenty minutes one morning to bring our tea out. There were also no large spoons resulting in cereals being eaten with a T-spoon!

On our last morning we were abruptly woken at 08.30 by the fire alarm, when the guests congregated outside the hotel none of the hotel staff checked we were all ok or informed us what was going on, the young girl on duty didn’t seem to know what to do, she just looked panicked! The staff did not seem to look organised or well fire safety trained, there was certainly no fire warden taking control. After learning it was a false alarm, the fire alarm then kept going off for about 2 hours on and off, it was very loud and there was no explanation or apology.

When waiting to pay our final bill I heard the manager talking to the lady in front of me (who was also dissatisfied) say he did not agree that the customer should dictate the service, much to mine and hers shock! Surely what the people want and their opinion is what makes a successful business, be it within the hospitality sector or not? He didn’t ask if we had a nice stay, just literally took our money and handed the receipt over.

I would never stay at the Beach House Hotel again or recommend it to anyone I know. I am not a fussy person when it comes to hotels and travel accommodation, I have travel Australia and the east coast of Africa and have roughed it quite a bit, but when you pay £100 a night, I expect a decent clean room but most importantly a warm welcoming helpful service from staff which, regrettable The Beach House does not offer! This hotel has the potential to be amazing, what a shame it lets Lulworth down!

Firstly, at £100 a night, it was my expectation that this hotel would offer all of the features ordinarily expected from a mid-range 3 star hotel ( i.e. Clean, well kept rooms with good service etc). However, on our arrival at the hotel it was clear that this would not be the case. The service we received on arrival was ok but the room and public areas of the hotel were very tired and worn and in need of some attention. Whilst some of the furniture in the room seemed new, other elements of the room had been neglected such as wallpaper peeling off the wall, mould in the bathroom on the walls and on the shower head. The room was sold to us as a double but in fact, the bed was made up of 2 singles pushed together (not ideal for a cost night!). The towels provided were very worn with holes in and stained in places. The room was clearly a disappointment to is but the main issue with our stat was the fact that we were locked out of the hotel on the evening of our stay! Returning to the hotel at 11.45 pm ( not excessively late) we found the hotel completely locked up. The key we were provided with did not fit the lock, the phone number for the hotel did not ring through to an emergency number and there was no night porter. We eventually entered the hotel by unconventional methods! Furthermore, we also had an issue with the lock on the door of our room in that it was very difficult to lock. This hotel is definitely not worth the money. In the hotel's literature, the biggest selling point is the hotel's location but even this is not spectacular when compared to other locations we have stayed at for less. We will not be returning to this hotel nor to lulworth cove.
We did not eat at the hotel so cannot comment on the food.

We stayed at their other property the Bishops Cottage and it felt like it was not finished. Saw dust, musty air, terrible bathroom and on top of that the staff at the hotel/restaurant were unhelpful and unfriendly. All that said its right next to the cove and a good place to start the Durdel Dor coastal walk from... the walk was great we forgot how bad the hotel was.
