“Great Half Term at Mazzard Farm”
Reviewed 25 October 2011

All three of my children loved staying at the farm - the cottage was very comfortable and overlooked the courtyard - I was happy for them to go out on their own to use the giant trampoline or go in to the orchard and play area - and we all went to play in the private woods.
The hosts were excellent - and provided very detailed suggestions for excursions prior to us arriving, which we used to plan our days out ( as well as the most delicious scones on arrival!)
The local beaches were beautiful - and we used the farm as a base for exploring the surrounding attractions.
I would certainly return ( despite it being a three hour drive) and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to recharge their batteries.

We really enjoyed our week at Mazzard Farm with our 3 year old son and 6 month old daughter. The welcome was fantastic with lovely homemade scones and we were so pleased with the beautiful and peaceful setting. The owners have really tried to cover every detail to make your stay comfortable with a room full of children's toys, laundry facilities, frozen croissants and DVDs/books to borrow. We were also able to borrow baby equipment which was very handy.

We stayed in Medlar cottage which was very clean and warm with the under floor heating. We are so glad we chose one of the cottages overlooking the courtyard as our son spent hours outside playing with the toys and on the trampoline. The cottage was big enough for us to feel at home and the bedrooms were very comfortable. However, it may feel a little compact if you've got much older children or if 4 adults were to stay in the cottage but it's just right for a young family.

Location-wise, it’s a great base to explore East Devon which is just lovely. It’s a very easy drive to some lovely seaside towns and villages. The only thing we missed on the holiday was being able to walk down easily to the local village. You do really need a car to get anywhere especially as the country lanes are too narrow to walk down safely with a buggy.

All in all, a great place to stay and would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Choose a courtyard cottage if you have a toddler or young child

We stayed in Bramley cottage for a long weekend, which was very spacious for just two people. We arrived to a very warm welcome from the owners and to homemade scones, clotted cream and jam!!!  The cottage had a lovely French door in the bedroom opening up onto a juliette balcony, a private patio area and BBQ. I saw some of the reviews for Mazzard Farm stating that some of the other cottages are small. I can't comment on them as I didn't see inside, but can say that Bramley was perfect size. The other cottages looked nice, but they are very open (especially two of them as you can see the whole downstairs from the courtyard), and are all situated around the courtyard area. Bramley is attached to the owners house and looks out onto the orchards and the pond.

This is a perfect place for a couple wanting to get away or if you have kids - as it's well equipped for them with climbing frames, football, rabbits etc.

My only criticisms for the cottage would be that the shower was not very powerful and that we couldn't access the wifi from the cottage itself, only the courtyard - which was disappointing for me but probably wouldn't be a problem for others. The owners are really friendly and cant do enough to offer help and assistance on the cottages themselves or the area. They have homemade produce for sale onsite and a freezer packed with frozen croissants which were lovely!!
Overall this place was fantastic and I can't wait to book again and go back!! Would highly recommend this place for location and overall facilities.

We spent a week at Mazzard Farm in September, and had a great time. Our cottage (Medlar) was well equipped, very clean and very comfortable, while the courtyard full of toys kept our daughter amused for hours on end. The climbing frame and woodland walk were also put to good use... There is plenty to do around the area, although much of it is not walkable from Mazzard Farm. Local shops are good, with the nearby farm shop being a particular favourite! A great place to stay in East Devon. Thank you!

We were thrilled with our week long stay at Mazzard Farm and have been recommending it to our friends. The location is great, rural walks from outside the door, 2 mins drive from a farm shop, 5 mins drive from village with nice quaint local shops (a sainsbury's under construction) and a co-op supermarket. (Very friendly locals too!) 20 minutes from Exeter for a days shopping, 20 mins from beautiful Sidmouth. Lots of family friendly activities and days out within easy reach. Donkey Sanctuary, Bicton Park, even the Eden Project was manageable at about 90mins drive away. The place itself is very well run by Ruud and Jacqueline, two extremely nice people.I think they have thought of everything a family might need or like while away. The cottage we stayed in was quite small but fine for a holiday, very comfortable with everything required supplied. Very pleasant communal laundry facilities with detergent provided. Homemade soaps and shampoos were available to purchase for own use or gifts at great prices. The facilities for the kids were the best I have ever seen, climbing frames, enormous teepee tent, football, swings, slides, large wood for exploring, orchard for collecting delicious apples, chickens to feed, rabbits and guinea pigs to admire and lots of toys, books dvds etc. Toys dvds and books available to borrow and bring in to the cottage. Bikes for all ages and various dolls prams and ride on toys. Lovely gardens for relaxing in. The owners live there too so any requirements they are on hand to deal with. The only drawback was a lack of connectivity to the wi-fi from our cottage. This was not a big issue for us personally. Mobile phone coverage in the area in general was not good (on my phone anyway). Highly recommend this holiday and we definitely hope to return.

Mazzard Farm is a beautiful place. We had freshly baked scones on arrival with jam and cream in the fridge- wonderful! Ruud en Jack are helpful and friendly hosts and I'd recommend this place to all. We stay in the cottage Russet. This cottage was very cosy, only the bathroom was very small. We stayed for 3 weeks with our 3 and 5 year old children. The grounds are great and the kids couldn't wait to get out there in the mornings. There's a great climbing frame, good outdoor toys and a really fantastic little wood for them to explore. It's also a great base from which to do day trips - we did one every day and didn't exhaust the possibilities. The owners are on site and help make Mazzard so special - warm and relaxed and very helpful. A really great place for a family holiday.

We agree with everything that has been written about Mazzard Farm. Our children are 1 and 4 and they both had a fabulous time. The highlights for them were definitely the chickens, rabbit and guinea pigs, as well as the trampoline and various vehicles to drive about! We were most impressed with the opportunity to walk and feed goats during our stay and sampling Jacquie's delicious apple crumble and home grown apples and plums from the orchard! Ela and Sebi would have been perfectly happy to have stayed on site throughout the week, but as there is so much to do in Devon, they also very much enjoyed the Sidmouth folk festival which was fantastic and particularly Jacob's Ladder beach.
Our only gripe, and I understand it is one that can't be fixed, is that we didn't have any real dedicated outdoor space in our 3 bedroom apartment. (but I do understand that the 2 bedroom apartments have direct access to the courtyard!)
We had a fantastic week and we hope to return when the children are a little bit older and explore more of Devon. Thank you Ruud and Jacquie.
